new shocks for an e36....compact...
Discussion
so my I'm assuming original shocks for my e36 compact are quite knackered, rears worse than back.
Was considering an ebay coil over job, but not heard great things bout them, so now leaning towards some sach or bilstein rear shocks, and keeping the original coils. This sound like a bad idea? the car is on 110k, but would still like to bring a bit of handling back to it.

Sachs will do a great job and give you as close to OEM spec damping as possible.
If you want to up-rate; go for Bilstein B6s or B8s. If the soprings are still in good nick; stay with them
Venom Motorsport usually do good prices for this stuff; but it could turn out to be costly and may be worth looking into decent spec coilovers such as D2s or BCs etc

thanks for all the suggestions, i ended up just getting some rear shocks and mounts, both sach, so will see hw i get on with those.
I noticed i have some surface corrosion where the mounts go into the turrets. Id like to deal with it while I'm in there, what's the best process. Was going to whire wheel it, corrosion stopper paint, then etch primer and paint on top. does this sound about right?
thanks

Sounds like a good idea, I've had good experiences with Kurust from Hammerite to convert the rust into a stable surface.I noticed i have some surface corrosion where the mounts go into the turrets. Great cars, I have a 318Ti M Sport and a very early 1995 one to boot.
I’ve just rebuilt all of my suspension with a Supersport shock and spring kit together with poly bushes for the ARB/wishbone eyelets, all new drop links, all new top mounts/dust boot kits, spring pads, upper spring plates and complete tie rods incl track rod ends.
After having the geometry set up, the handling is out of this world. I’m also running BMW Style 32 8x17 with 225/45/17 Kumho PS71.
With Sachs you cannot go wrong, and I think you were right to avoid coilovers as in my experience they are hateful things if at the cheap end of the market.
Ref turret rust, I’d grind back with a wire wheel, paint with Bilt Hamber Hydrate 80, coat with David’s Zinc182 and once dried, coat with 3M stonechip and finally, a coat of either Comma Waxseal or Dinitrol 4194.
Enjoy your car.
