I have an 2005 BMW 116 which I want to get the chain done.
Not going to BMW of course but rather than just googling I thought Id ask for recommendations.

In Guildford/Farnham area.

I assume one should use OEM parts for something this cruicial.

Any idea what sort of cost it should be? Ive seen on the net people saying £1000+ which seems a bit excessive.

There's a list of independent BMW specialists here: https://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&...
Maybe ring around. I used Bartlett Automotive in Cambridgeshire for a timing chain this week, completely different engine to the N45 mind, but it was £795 fixed price, and included an oil change (& filter) for the N13. It's like new again.

Lee Shannon looks like the nearest to you based on this:- https://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&...

I've used TWG Automotive in Camberley for over 5 years and always been very pleased, but I've seen positive reviews for BMS in Leatherhead too - my sister was very happy with the work they did on her Mini R50.

Might be worth getting some quotes before you commit, but I hope you can get it sorted for sensible money. thumbup

Out of interest, due to the age of the car, what about trying a local garage to you for a price to, just for comparison against the specialists or do people feel this is a silly idea? My sister takes her Audi A3 to Hawthorns in Farnham. Also, not knowing the car's history, is it worth spending serious money on it? under £3,000 could get you an 2010 118i from a quick look on Autotrader.

Had the same thing done on a Cooper S (similar issue, appreciate not identical engines... ), cost ~£300 at my local indy garage. They were very familiar with the process and problems on both Minis and BMW.

You'll do a lot worse than BMR Performance down near Crawley, 01293 773774.

You're looking at £125 for a chain kit from Febi, and 4 hours labour. The N45 doesn't have balance shafts or Valvetronic so they are easier. Reckon on a couple of new or used Vanos solenoids, as the worn chain can start to eat into them.

Sadly a 2010 118i is still a model that suffers from weak timing chains.

N43's (2007 onwards) are even worse!
