Hi all, my wife recently got a new BMW X2 in M Sport trim. I’ve been trying to activate the passenger mirror tilt when the vehicle is put in reverse, but with no joy.

The manual makes it look pretty straightforward, push the mirror switch to the right and select reverse, and the mirror will tilt, only this doesn’t happen.

Can anyone help?

Are you sure you have the option fitted? It is not standard.

On the 2 series you need the dipping mirrors option to get the near side mirror to dip when in reverse - i.e. the interior mirror and the driver's door mirror must have auto dipping to prevent being dazzled. Don't ask me why these two options are bundled!

I am pretty sure auto-dimming interior rear view mirror is standard on ALL BMWs (and so it should be), but auto-dimming on the exterior rear view is optional (and not essential at all in my experience).

TIP: just leave the exterior mirror adjustment always to passenger side, it is pretty easy to then adjust it down by your finger when needed. Alternatively, leave it pointed slightly downwards, then sit upwards and forwards to get an even lower view.

Not everyone wants a dipping external passenger-side mirror, you may find it a nuisance reversing into a gap between two cars, for instance.

Ah, thank you all, I believe the only options the car has is metallic paint and privacy glass. Shame BMW can’t see fit to include something that is so basic as standard.

Actually a quick review on the configurator for X2 (as opposed to the 2 series coupe which I was remembering) indicates that you need electric folding exterior mirrors (with or without anti dazzle) to get the near side to dip when in reverse.

On the coupe electric folding mirrors is bundled with anti-dazzle and reverse dip (and yes, the interior anti dazzle is optional and not standard).

I personally disagree it is that basic. As I said, if it always dips, there are plenty of situations where it may be a nuisance, that is reversing into a gap, between to cars, or gate posts, etc. It is not always the situation that you want it ALWAYS to dip to see a kerb.
Anyway. If you go onto BMW website, there is a link where you can put your VIN in and download a handbook specific to your car. Also, the handbook is perhaps in your vehicle iDrive system, it is on mine.

On F30 335d, the interior mirror anti-dazzle (code 431) is standard. But, yes, the exterior folding mirrors with anti-dazzle (code 430), are an option. Whether codes are standard fit, options, or bundled with packages, varies with model, trim, performance level, and I guess model year.

But I don’t need a Golf!
I also don’t want dipping passenger mirror, for the reasons I stated. Nor do I want auto-fold mirrors.
There are some options people definitely do not want.

On a Golf it’s an option via the car’s settings. You’re not forced to use it. She only finds it useful because the car gets parked on street a lot where it’s parallel parked.

Anyway, not to worry, I just hope the wheels don’t get too much of a hard time!

On my 335d xDrive with folding mirrors, the mirror adjustment selector button (left or right mirror) needs to be on the driver's side (right) position in order to dip in reverse. If on the left it does not dip in reverse. Handy, as when parking in a car park you might not want it dipped.

I see, so
a) if you want it to dip - you leave it to the right, or move it to the right
b) if you don’t want it to dip - you leave it to the left or move it to the left.

Alternatively, if you don’t have the option, then, as you rarely adjust mirrors once set:
If you want it to dip, you just leave it to the left, and press the down button, simples!
Sometimes ‘workarounds’ are easier than the given automatic operation. As you pull up to reverse and need a dipped passenger mirror, left hand selects reverse and right hand has already moved to press the down button.

On the issue of folding mirrors. I have never seen benefits. They act as a protector and a gauge. On F30s the black base body of the mirror is strong and protects the whole mirror unit. I drove through a narrow gap, using the driver’s mirror as a guide against the post. It just deflected and pinged back, no damage at all.

Now, one thing I can’t live without is the rear parking sensors and camera, especially when reversing (and using the non-dipping external mirrors for width guidance wink )
When the rear limit, say a white line on the ground just disappears from camera view, it is exactly vertically below the rear bumper, very precise.

Yes, assuming you have the folding mirror option. Folding mirrors are good in narrow car parks, like station ones with pillars where you can't get out of the car.

Sometimes in narrow spaces, I like to position my car so that if others are careless opening their front door(s) their door will hit my mirror and not dent my car!
