'phone removal

Hi folks
I've spent considerable time faffing about with the BM car 'phone, factory installed in my recently acquired E39 523i back in1998, to no avail. I've now decided that as it's unlikely to ever be used the best course of action is to remove it from the centre console & substitute the armrest for a standard version.
If anyone on here has carried out this task advice on the phones' removal would be greatly appreciated.
