I have a 2005 E90 330i on 17s which needs a set of rear tyres. All the tyre websites suggest 255/40r17 as the correct size, I looked at the tyres on the car and they are 225/45r17, same as the fronts. Did any e90s come like this from the factory or were they all staggered, also are the rim sizes staggered and can I check I have the correct rims? What size should I go for?

You have photos of the rims with tyres on? Front and rear they're all the same?

Do you have an se, or m-sport?

SE come on 225/45/17 all round, m-sport are staggered with 225/45/17 f, 255/40/17 rear.

If your tyres look the same in terms of ‘stretch’ on the sidewall (i.e. the front currently looks the same as the back), then 225 it is.

In my experience of a 330d (se) and 335d (m-sport), the handling is nicer overall on the 225 all-round width.

The additional bonus of using 225’s is they’re probably the most common tyre size right now, even Corsa’s use them, so they’re cheap, and readily available. Plus, you can swap f<>r and get longer out of a set.

This; it'll also give you the tyre sizes you need/have

Some tourings came with straight sized wheels all round, so it could be that yours has this and not a staggered set up. Personally, I'd still run a wider tyre on the rear, maybe 245s etc

I have an SE. If that's the case then great, it drives beautifully on the 225s and they are less than 2/3 of the price of 255s, £85 each for Pilot Sport 4s clap.

I have a 55 plate 330i SE and it has 17" style 158 wheels - the OEM alternatives for the E9* 3 Series are on here:- http://www.alloywheelsdirect.net/bmw_alloy_wheels/...

So mine are 8J all round and run 225/45 x 17 tyres front and rear.

I think Sport or M-Sport models had "staggered" 18s, which are usually 8J on the front and 8.5J on the rear with 225/40 tyres on the front and 255/35 on the rear.

To be fair I prefer the "square" 17s for the better ride and the cheaper tyres - my 330i has never felt like it is running out of grip on 225 tyres!
