Need help diagnosing the sound on 2010 320d msport
Discussion
Hey guys, im getting a horrible sound coming from somewhere under the bonnet of my 2010 320d msport 72000 miles and im getting mixed messages from verious mechanics.
When im driving around im getting a whilstle/screetch and the sound is amplified when driving past parked cars and when i go over small speed bumps i get a quick harsh screetch and also when i turn the engine off and everything comes to a hault i get the same sound for a second or 2.
My cousin works at the garage near my home and he said its the fan belt which he changed(no fix) then my usual garage said/changed the tensioner (got worse) so took it back and he had all day and then said it's either dual mass flywheel or the dreaded TIMING CHAIN!!!
Took to garage across from work and told them all this and he said sounds metallic lol and there's vibration in clutch pedal and as you need to take off gearbox to do you might as well change timing too but you can't hear it when stationary and its not a clattering sound but a whistle/screetch
CAN ANYONE HELP PLEASE!!!!!! LOL

DMF probably, It's the right sort of miles for this (lower end to be fair) and you've changed other likely culprits.
I own a diesel and have 70k on her, 67k are mine. I have budgeted for a dmf & dpf + egr replacement at 100k.
BMW DPFs don’t need replacing. If they are blocked (due to a fault with a another component) a forced regen or chemical clean will sort them. I own a diesel and have 70k on her, 67k are mine. I have budgeted for a dmf & dpf + egr replacement at 100k.

Anymore info on this i.e what's different to other brands - I'm interested as considering a BMW as my next car and currently have a VAG diesel. I've never seen the light on mine but feel 100k is fair game for a replacement if I did get problems. The life expectation of a BMW dpf is burried somewhere in their documentation or your local BMW service desk can tell you the serviceable life expectancy for respective models.
A few years back I had a 56 plate 325d which had repeated dpf issues, it had done around 70k at the time and they said they should last 125k so replaced it under warranty.
