Just picked car up from latest service completed as part of service plan. ~Not running right, took it back.
'Diagnosis' suggests carbon clean and new manifold required sir. Cant identify fault, reason for this to occur or say if this is rare or common. At 49k miles I'm feeling that this sort of issue and required expenditure c £825 isnt going to make me a long term fan.

Was it ok before the service and now it’s running rough?

There may be carbon buildup but I doubt that is the cause of rough running if it was ok before they touched it

I'd get a 2nd opinion from someone a little less, well, dealery! Sounds like they either left something off after servicing it, or they broke something - either way wanting you to foot the bill.
Can you clarify, is this a 320d or a 320i as your thread title doesn't give much away.

Pretty much so after the service,on way home I noticed the change in performance.
‘Amusingly’ the likely bill has risen to £1600 this morning from £700 yesterday
At the diagnostic hour yesterday (£125 + vat, thanks) no faults were found on the cars log.

Ok so an update after a difficult 7 weeks of dire customer comms -but that’s for another day.

The previous work didn’t fix the fault and it’s now been diagnosed as an issue with an injector leaking excessive fuel into the cylinders causing hydraulic action to occur. This has caused the con rod to bend and the bore to go into an oval shape.

This apparently necessitates a new engine. In a car less than 4 years old/49k miles/fully serviced at BMW .....which will be at significant cost.......

I sense a big goodwill contribution from BMW on this. 49k miles, BMW s/h, failure on their part to diagnose? I wouldn't want to be paying too much towards this.....

So how much would be not much? Say it costs £12k....

This all sounds like b*llocks. For an injector to do that it would need to go absolutely bananas and flood the bore - running on three cylinders, cloud of black smoke as it tried to burn it off etc.

Taken with a very large pinch of salt.

If it did this after it had been in for a service, they've ballsed it up and are now getting you to pay for it. When a diesel injector does this, you get a LOT of black smoke because the engine cannot ingest enough air to burn it off.
