Hey guys, maybe someone could give me their expertise please.

I am coming back to the UK soon and need a new motor.
My previous car was a 135I N54 which I think is one of the most fun cars I have owned.
Now I have a 2014 328i, its ok just doesn't really excite me that much coming from the 135i

I was going to have a change from BMW and also have my eye on XE S, S3, S4, S5, Golf R so lots of choices but all have their + and -
Have around £20K ish to spend.

But the 6 series has always caught my eye, for 20k you can get a 2016 model 640D with about 40K on the clock which just sounds like crazy good value.
Need to buy a car pretty quickly when I get back so might not have time to test drive all my options.
I want something fast and sporty, 6 series I know is fast but some people say not too sporty!

Anyway back to my point.
If I go for a 6 series will it cost a lot more than say a 3 series or even an S5 to maintain?
I hear some people go for a BMW warrantee to give piece of mind.

Cheers.

One point of caution, if you are returning to the U.K. cars have got bigger, but most parking spaces have not. Width and length can be an issue in many car parks, especially multi-storey ones.

Cheers Pica, been gone for 5 years now.
Maybe I should be looking at the 140i instead... my head hurts.

If sportiness is top priority then the diesel 6 isn’t going to be anymore exciting than the 3 series you’ve had previously. I had a 640i; loved it but it’s a cruiser; too big and heavy for any b-road fun.

That said, maintenance-wise mine was completely trouble free for the 3 years I had it.

Only you know what kind of driving you will be doing and how much space you need. A 640d is a sublime motorway cruiser but not “fun”. A 140i would be much more exciting if comfort and space is not high on the list of priorities.

It is one of the most favourite cars I've had. Great looks and brilliant cruising ability. The performance/economy mix is excellent too.

As others have said it is a big/heavy car so it isn't the most engaging thing to drive, but as a GT I was a big fan.

Lots of oil changes. The N57X has a reputation now for big end/crank trouble so oil/filter every 10'000 miles latest. They are very, very expensive to fix so.....

A BMW warranty is a very good idea.

Thanks for the pointers guys.
Not many motorway miles to cover and don't need much space so i'll probably look at a smaller sportier number instead then.

I’ve had a 640d GC for a few years, fantastic car. Sports+ mode turns into a very quick enjoyable car. Remove the runflats asap. Very cheap to maintain. They represent excellent value now too.

These are big heavy cars. They are quick enough but don't expect it to be sporty. Be sure to test drive before purchase

If you intend to keep it on run flat tyres, expect to pay £1,000 for a full set

I've had a 640d GC for three years.

It is plenty sporty enough in sports or plus mode. Unless you want an elise experience i cant see anyone being disappointed with its get up and go.

Comfort wise the GC is a better car than the coupe. Some testers actually believe it handled better as well with the extra few inches between the wheels.

I'm handing mine back in two months as the depreciation is utterly horrendous. Since they stopped selling then the values have plummeted. My 16 plate owes £29k and is worth £18k as a trade in.

Great for the next owner though smile
