I have a 65 reg. BMW 220i M Sport coupe. The car is due for MOT this month. I can get this done cheaper locally and at an independent garage, this would be considerably cheaper than the local BMW dealership.
If I had it done at the local independent garage, they would not zero the service reading, so is there a way that I can do this myself.

This is a joke surely??If I had it done at the local independent garage, they would not zero the service reading, so is there a way that I can do this myself.
MOT and service counter are not related.
MOT testing and servicing are completely separate. Take your car wherever you want for either, but regarding cost the ministry of transport specify a maximum MOT test cost. So if the dealership are charging more then they are likely taking it elsewhere for the test, then charging you for the privilege of taking it there on your behalf...
For all you know-it-alls jumping in
Most late model BMWs have an Statutory Inspection ( MOT ) reminder built into the service screen on the iDrive, and it will be this that the OP needs to reset.
Unlike the other items on the screen the Statutory Inspection field can be done by the owner. From memory, I'm sure you just click on it with the iDrive controller, if not then have a look in the handbook and there should be something there

That's not what the OP said, but I will hold my hands up and say I am one such know-it-all.
