I haven't been in the latest 3 Series, only the previous one. They're good cars in an efficient sort of way but need the six cylinder engine to run as smoothly as the barges you are accustomed to. It could be the late-model 320d is much improved, but I thought the 4 cylinder diesel a rough, clattery taxi-like thing in the E90 I drove as a loan car a while back. It made the car feel very mundane.
Nearly did the same a few years ago (looked at financing one as they just seem to be such good every day cars). In the end I used the finance deposit and bought an older 325i touring, which has been a great car. Recently took out a 320d to see if it was worth changing up for but it seemed like a lot of money just to have something newer.
The f30 320d (pictured) will have the N47T engine which is supposed to be revised to prevent the timing chain issue. Some people say it's not been completely eliminated.
The 330d is a better engine, but the 320d is still a great car for cruising down the motorway and isn't a slouch. The ZF auto is also highly recommended.
Main gripes are cabin is a bit noisy

I agree that the 330d has a much better engine, but some people want the 2.0l.
I’ve driven a lot of 320d’s as loaners, various different iterations and specs, the best one to drive was a 320d s drive on 18inch alloys.
The 320d is a brilliant car and I always end up liking them very much until I used to get back into my 430d.
That 320d looks lovely and it will be nice to drive but, after experiencing both many time’s, back to back, the 330d is the one you want

I had a 320d MSport on 19" wheels when my 330d was in for the EGR cooler issue. The performance made me think that I didn't really need a 330d! But - I found the ride on the passive MSport suspension and 19" wheels unacceptable. I like a firm ride (normally have the adaptive suspension on mine in Sport) but it was contantly fidgeting about and quite comfortable even motorways and felt like it was going to bounce off the road a couple of times on country roads. I can only assume it was the wheel size - so something to watch.
In reality they're very good cars, but I'd rather the 30d because its a much nicer engine (although it still clearly sounds like a diesel on start up / tick over). I'd definitely want an auto too.
I don't mind the interior although an a lot think it's dull / dated etc. Its functional and the pro nav improves it a fair bit.
