If you've been getting vibration through the clutch and now that noise, my money would be on the dual mass flywheel.

That does not sound good at all in fact I would be frightened it was going to go bang any minute. Sorry have not a clue what’s wrong although there clearly is.

That doesn’t sound at all great smile

I presume that’s been accompanied by a lack of power, or have you stopped driving it ?

You don’t get any warning lights for a faulty flywheel. Timing chains get noisy on these too.

Sorry to hear your bad news. Maybe a local independent specialist could give you a second opinion.

Re Honda-they don’t make em like they used to, they too have regular premature failures.

Does the noise sound like it’s coming from the front on the rear of the engine ?

All the talk of being clutch and DMF and the fact it makes the noise even at idle in the video makes for at least less likely to be bottom end (not saying it could be though).

I think the timing chain or more than likely sadly a guide has failed as the chain is in exactly the right place on an infamous engine fo chain problems.

It would be one of the earliest cases I have directly read about mind, sadly. And like so many times complained about the chain is an engine and gearbox out problem.

View it this way agree to it and bmw warranty should cover diag costs, it might be worth a call to them to chat through it though? Ultimately it will be for the dealer to go through it mind.

If it’s still running then it’s 2 chains some guides and a tensioner, not sure if it can be done in situ on the 3 series but know it can on the 5. If it’s still running then the cam carrier is safe which makes less work. The job is around £1500 if the head doesn’t need to come off or the engine out. Luckily once the gearbox is out of the way you can see more.

Warranty’s never pay for diagnostics unless it’s a brand new car or official manufacturer warranty (most of the time) however the difficult bit is diagnosing the issue in the first place

We had a 5 series in last week that sounded similar to yours, i’ve Not known a Bm diesel suffer from bottom end failure though, mazdas and Vauxhall’s yes - dropping the sump and pulling the caps off should not be too bad, possibly 2 hours ? Gearbox is around 2.5 hours for manual
