My 2013 F10 M5 is getting a bit leggy now (67k) and frankly I'm sick of filling it up with fuel, I use it for towing my race car and although it tows well, I have to stop at pretty much every gas station I pass.

I used to have an E91 330D Touring and can honestly say it was the best car I've owned. Went looking at 335D MSports and was quite shocked at how they all seem to be poverty spec.

Viewed one yesterday with almost every option, but it still feels cheap inside, the dakota leather looks cheap and the manual seats look worse that my E91 of yesteryear. This car has heated seats, heated wheel, innovation, interior comfort, msport plus and advanced parking packages, as well as electric towbar (which I really wanted) yet I still feel underwhelmed by it.

Just wondering why BMW have such a huge spec gap between the M cars and everything else and it seems to be widening.

I think the difference between the 3 series & 5 series is huge in terms of quality. Why not look at a F11 530d or 535d? I find the F31 330d or 335d very overpriced for what they are, specification as you say is very dependent on the first owner (usually a company car that had near zero extra options). 5's tend to be better specced. The difference in quality and spec between your current M5 & 535d won't be night & day like the 3.

The difference in interio size is noticeable too! Well worth taking into consideration IMO

Get a G11 730d or 740d, used they are great value make most other BMWs feel like empty rooms inside.

I've had an F10M5 and the 335d xdrive I agree the f30 is awful inside compared to the M5 the 7 is better than the M5, I'll add that the G11 has the gen2 ZF8 much better than the gen1 in the 335d plus the B57 engine again much smoother with more power and torque than the 35d.

I went from an LCI F10 M5 (over an X5 M50D and Giulia Quadrifoglio) to a 335D M Sport, and can honestly say I wish I had kept the M5. Fuel economy was in the big picture completely insignificant and with an 80 litre tank at least it still had a decent range. Was built like a tank, in comparison to the F31, where there is too much road and wind noise.

The F31 does have a great fuel economy, averaging 8 litres/100 km with high speed cruising, where the M5 would be at 12 litres/100 km (so 50 % less), and it is very surefooted with xdrive traction, and the ZF 8 speed is also smoother than the DCT.

Guess mine is highly specced (adaptive LED, HUD, H&K, adaptive suspension, adaptive CC), but still a step down (understandably so) from an F10.

Well by way of an update, I left a deposit on the 335D and agreed a PX of my M5, but with the option to try and sell it privately.

Spent the day sorting my car to advertise it, replaced the 295/35/20 tyres back with the correct 295/30/20 tyres (I swapped them because the roads are so bad where I live the rear rims used to crack with the 30 profiles) and decided to remove the towbar because it would out buyers off, washed & hoovered it and took photos. During the process I feel back in love with the M5 and after sleeping on it, have decided to go with my heart and keep the M5. Mainly because most of the depreciation has happened on this car and I would be likely to loose more on a nearly new 335D. Don't know what I was thinking really, but an expensive lesson no doubt......

I've just seen this. I swapped my F10 LCI M5 com pack for a new (pre reg) F31 335Xdrive 2 weeks ago.
I don't miss the M5. The late F31 are actually a nice place to be, admittedly not as nice as the M5. I do notice the lack of pace on a motorway slip road, however I realised I that the M5 was just too fast to enjoy most of the time.

The reduced running costs are significant, you could easily run another fun car with the difference (that's what I'm doing smile).

Have you tried mapping your 335d?

I almost went the other way - I put a deposit down on an LCI F10 M5 this time last year to replace an aging 335i Touring.

Over the next week or so I had a constant battle of heart vs head on whether it was a ridiculously stupid decision - I was really anxious about the running costs - and in the end, asked for my deposit back.

The thing that struck me most about the M5 was just how lovely it was inside - a significant step up from the 3 series.

I ended up in an M140i and regularly think I should have just stuck with it and got the M5...

My (high spec) F31 lasted 9 months. Felt low rent after a F11 530d which is one of the best cars I have ever owned. Chopped the 3 series in for a C7 RS6 - which is what I should have bought in the first place.
Try a F10/11 or the latest one if budget allows. So much better than a 3 series.
