The wife's facelift 2015 M135i is due a service in c2k miles, likely be reached in the next 3-4 months and is currently on 84k miles.

Given the mileage/age would you advise getting the gearbox oil changed now, at all or will it wait until the next service (likely 18 months/14k miles from now). Car is used for a daily 6 mile commute, any long trip we do and plenty of hooning around the countryside. Gearbox showing no signs of issue but want to make sure it lasts as the car will likely be kept for a good few years yet.

BMW state that they are sealed for life units, ZF recommend that the oil is changed every 60k I believe.

Exactly - hence I'm questioning it

Did have a box go on my E39 540i needing a rebuild at £2k - I'd rather not have to repeat the expense if £300 every 5 years would fix it

I think it would be worth having done if you intend to keep the car.

I need to look into a gearbox service on my 2015 430d which is coming up to 65k as I want to keep it for a few more years.

As BMW state these are sealed for life, do franchise garages still offer the service or is it best to go to a ZF specialist?

Definitely do it! BMW say they're sealed for life, but I guess it depends on your definition of 'life' - will the gearbox live longer if you change the oil?...

From previous postings, I believe it is not a case of the transmission living longer, more a case of improving the smoothness of changes.
Also, if the car will be sold at some point, and that would be a bonus selling point if documentation as to when, where and why it was done is available.

Mine is on 52k I have noticed changes are fine but nos as new. I think BMW idea of for life is not the same as what we class life. probably 6-8 years for the manufacturer and any more for us. No manufacturer wants to build a car that feels new after 10 years. They want to sell cars! Most cars these days will do easily 10 years or 200k miles without engine blowing up!
