E61 Automatic Tailgate Failure Advice Please
Discussion
Morning,
Can anyone advise me if it's possible to retrofit a manual gas strut to my 05 E61 535d Touring which has the (rare) automatic tailgate opening option fitted. The automatic NSR hydraulic strut has properly crocked it and dislodged from its mounting an near enough jamming the boot mechanism.
Long story but a well known BMW franchise main stealer in Bristol has damaged the strut as part of the battery cable replacement recall and is now trying to fleece me £1250 to replace it at my own expense!
I'm escalating a complaint with their head office on Monday but would be good to get some technical advice in the interim please.
Thanks very much chaps.

So it was broken before it went to the dealer and now it’s broken even more?
Did u earn them it was broken when you dropped it off?
But yes you can fit manual struts as the mountings are the same
I think the part was probably on the way out but when it was returned it had completely failed. I'm happy to pay for the part - I think they should be fitting it free of charge as they broke it, not unreasonable.Did u earn them it was broken when you dropped it off?

Good to know about the manual struts. Thanks for this.
It might be just me, but I do think that’s unreasonable - you knew it was on the way out, I’m guessing didn’t warn them about it, and what could they have done apart from open and close it to cause it to break? It is a 14 year old car and them tailgates are bloody heavy.
It’s bad luck that it happened whilst with them - but if u go in to the dealer blaming them, all that happens is the technician that was unlucky enough to have to work on the car will get shouted at and if they agreed to do the labour for nothing - it will be that technician that will be doing it for nothing, not the dealership.the technicians pay is not high, and they rely quite a lot on bonus for the amount of work they get through to bump up their pay - working on your car for nothing will just lose the tech money when it isn’t really their fault and the dealership won’t be affected at all
