e63 645ci torque convertor
Discussion
All,
My 645ci gearbox has a problem
i changed the pan and oil which fixed the overheating problem error.
however one issue remains which I think is the torque converter as follow:
when I floor it when car is cold then all fine however as soon as it is warm, it knocks and vibrates at times and throws an error which is rest on switch off and on.
it gets worse if I switch traction off and floor it when engine is up to temp . it judders and I feel it when even I drive on slow acceleration off the light, it is not a smooth gear engagment, it is like a switch and knock.
would it be my torque?
What happens if I continue to drive it ?
Does the oil from pan make its way to torque convertor as I thought torque convertor is sealed and no oil will go through the housing . I think the oil only circulates in the pan and mechtronic unit.
please help

As far as im aware, when i had the oil dropped in my 530d, the guy said that they dont really get all the oil out as the TC still holds some.....
(assuming here its the same/similar set up)
Have you rechecked the level since you ve run it for a bit?
Sussex autos seems to be the go to place for a TC refurb, on the E60 pages on Bookface they are saying its 24 hr turn around.
Might be worth ringing them and seeing if they can shed any light on your issues.

How did you set the oil level? Ideally, you need a live temp feed via dianostic computer to set the oil level between a specific temperature range.
You might need to get codes scanned for with high-level software, this might point you in the direction of the fault. It probably wont be the torque converter, but it could be the shift solenoids, or it could be a lock-up clutch malfunction (these dont operate until the oil temp is about - I think - 40-odd deg.C)
