I was driving the car at on the motorway at 70 with cruise control on, when I felt some kind of vibration, and notice that I was slowing down as cruise control had disengaged.
My heart skipped a beat when I saw that on screen 1 the Brake, ABS, and DSC lights were on, and on screen 2 the ABS lights was on in yellow.
Nothing seemed anomalous, I stopped after a couple of miles to look at the manual and get some fuel.
I was very puzzled, since that specific combination is not in the manual, and then when I started again the engine, all lights were gone.

What might have happened, or what should I have checked?

Can you have the fault codes checked?

ABS Pump failure or rear wheels speed reluctor rings corroded. My bet is on the former. They can be repaired by https://www.ecutesting.com/common-faults/bmw/

Yep sounds more like the former to me as well. I had the reluctor ring issue on an E90. It made the traction control light kick in and prevented use of the throttle whilst traction control was enabled, so what you've described doesn't sound like that. The reluctor ring issue quite often manifests itself when you're cornering.

This happened on my old 120i. I rang my specialist and he knew what it was straight away. I've still got the service history at home so I'll dig it out after work and have a look

If you could, that would be really handy: I still have not spoken to a specialist.

Could be the ECU/pump, a very common problem. Check the part numbers the pump/ECU - you'll need a torch and a mirror. 4 cylinder 1/3 Series units are plentiful and cheap. I've got a minter here for 50 quid from a 2008 318i so probably the same. About 45 minutes/hour to fit the units, 30 mins to pressure bled the brakes.

It could be a sensor - if it shows a rear one, it may be the rusted/split ABS ring on the CV joint. Not a massive task to sort as long as the driveshaft comes out OK.

It was an ABs ring on my 1 series.

So in the end it looks like it was a reluctor ring. One has been changed, along the sensor, and since then there have been no more problems, and there were no ABS pump fault codes.
Now I just need to learn to properly a drive a RWD car...
