Just in the process of buying some winter wheels/tyres (2nd hand) but can anyone tell me what will happen if I don't have the tpms valves and just go with standard valves, will this cause any issues or will I just get a warning message on start-up. Cheers

Car is a 68 plate 3 series estate m-sport

Had this scenario last week when i had winter tyres fitted; standard rubber valve with tyre sensor intact worked fine.

One of the metal valves had corroded and broke when being unscrewed to release pressure.

If you don't have run flats it will be fine I guess, if you are putting in run flats though you really need the sensors.

Not sure on error warnings etc. I would guess it just won't give a reading.

TPMS is a mandated safety feature. I would worry about my insurance cover if I knowingly disabled it in such a way.

That’s hard to understand. ‘Standard’ rubber valves don’t have sensors. Some sensor valves do have rubber stems but most are still metal.

As for the one that corroded, was it a metal dust cap?

I run run flat winters without TPMS. You get an error on startup which you clear by pressing the iDrive button. I check tyre pressures weekly to be sure they are OK.
I also inform my insurers when I change over each winter / spring, to ensure no issues.

Only when running run flats.

I’m not sure what difference that makes. TPMS is useful whatever tyres you have and it’s been mandatory on all new vehicles for some years now

It’s also an MOT failure to have an inoperative system on a car that is/was fitted with such.

To be honest, given the relatively low cost of sensors, I can’t see the sense in not making use of the system.

Sorry, I didn't realise that they have been mandated on all new cars since 2014, whether run flats or not, just looked it up.

So yeah, running without them would be silly.

The BMW ones are around £120 a set, a few crop up on eBay for half that used, but try and make sure they are the right ones for your car.

www.realoem.com will show you which ones you need if you enter your vin.

Really? I didn’t know that and have been through two MOTs when running winters with no TPMS, with no issues!

If this is the case, I’d better look to get some fitted, just in case.

Def. get the TPMS fitted. BMW ins and Aviva said it invalidates the ins if not. We have 3 x sets of winter wheels for our daily drivers which now have them already fitted. You can swap them over from tyre to tyre but it's a b*ll-ache and for what they cost you may as well have them on each wheel. After a few miles the car will pick up the new wheels/sensors and update.

You can screw in the rubber valve stem (the metal bit had corroded into where it screws into the TPS on the inside of the wheel rim) into the TPS.
The sensor is still there and working fine. temp and pressure being reported and changes as you drive as per other wheels.

There are also warranty issues. I just been round the circle of old wheels, after-market wheels etc etc but BMW states using non-recommended wheels may invalidate warranty.

It will work fine but you'll get the warning message.
Also you won't be able to run it in Sport+ mode with the TPMS warning active.

Thanks, in light of the information gained from this I played safe with a very nice set of second hand immaculate 18" M441's in dark grey with the sensors and Michelin alpines. To be honest, I hadn't considered warrantee or insurance implications and knowing what insurance companies are like ( bds ! ), any chance of avoiding a payout will be used !

Eh, personally I wouldn't worry about the TPMS sensors regarding insurance, but completely understand your point., I can't imagine a loss adjuster would remove your tyres and declare your insurance invalid if someone rear ended you...........

They are advertised on fleabay but local to me (Stoke-on Trent) so give him ring to view and do a better deal in person. He has loads in a barn, and all very good. Just over a grand with 6-7mm Michelin Pilot Alpins. Glad I didn't go down the non gen route to save about £400, well worth the extra IMO. If you search (BMW winter wheels 18 ) on fleabay, put a nearest to 'ST' post code and you will see a few different options.

How much! eek

I'm just glad my BMWs are older and use the ABS sensors for the TPWS.

I got a set of 16s fitted with Alpins for my E46 (non-RFTs as no TPWS) for less than £200!
