Thinking of changing my F31 335d x drive to an X3 M40i.
The 335 is fantastic and pretty good on fuel all things considered but time to change in the new year.
With mixed driving, a combination of A roads and motorway (albeit speed restricted M4) what have others achieved as an average mpg?

I did this exact swap in June this year went from a 335d to the M40i.The 335 is fantastic and pretty good on fuel all things considered but time to change in the new year.

It’s a 15 mile commute for me with half in the stop start school run traffic and the other half on a motorway, my average is 25mpg and that’s if you drive with the lightest right foot. On a long motorway run I get about 36mpg, it’s the stop start that kills it due to the size.
But if I’m honest the sound and the speed of the M40i is addictive. Mines a 2019 so not as outrageously loud the the pops and bangs as the earlier models.
Also have a look around the deals on these are crazy at the moment but be carful as the X3M deals are not far off the M40i and your man maths will start to come in to play.

Thanks - I’ve seen the X3M deals and got some good deals from Carwow on a 40i but not sure I could live with the X3M as a daily. I need to get a test drive as Mrs C is not convinced but then she doesn’t like my Caterham either!
I have done 10500 miles in my X3 M40i now since March with a running average of just over 29mpg. I've seen 36 on a run, I've seen 18 in town. If you drive with any small amount of anticipation you can get 29. If you spend the entire journey on and off the power and accelerating hard then 22-24mpg is more usual. I've driven both ways and honestly find it too fast to drive "on the door handles" all the time - you'd lose your licence.
I've had my X3 M40i for 5 months ... and am averaging 23.5mpg. That is for 4 mile each way commutes in SW London and maybe a weekly 30 mile each way trip to a friend.
I replaced an M240i convertible with it and love it. It is quiet in comparison but that suits the nature of the beast.
I was going to wait for an X3MC but didn't. I think even though the deals are great on them the ride, as a daily, will become tiresome for someone like me who bought the M40i for a bit of comfort. If I was in an M2C I would expect hard but not in the M40i which is just right. I have RFT's on 21's and love the look and ride quality - I can't comment on the X3MC but can say the M40i has hit it just right with ride quality and performance which is great.
My M240i at the lowly 3.5K miles I have done was doing less than my X3 M40i so I expect with maybe 8K on it the mpg for me will end up about 26-27mpg as it was 28mpg on the M240i after only 22mpg until I hit 5K miles.
If you get an M40i you will love it I am sure but do try the X3MC if there are still deals - just remember it has a running in service and 'M' tax !!! Insurance I would expect to be a fair bit more than the M40i too which is just so right in so many areas !!!

Unfortunately we've had a bit of a shocker with ours. Its been back at the dealership for 7 of the 18 days we've owned it.
Not sure whether its linked to the new idrive 7 and live cockpit, but essentially the car has lost power on numerous occasions (drive train and steering) and thrown multiple error messages. Before it went back for the second time it failed to even start!
Truly disappointing having waited since July for it to arrive, and after 4 great years in a 35d which never missed a beat.
Not really sure what to do!
