Hi all.

I have a 2010 Z4 with the N52 B30 3.0 engine.

The vanos is making a hell of a noise at idle. Starts approx 20 seconds after start up and disappears above approx 2k revs.

Engine light on P0012 which is of course vanos.

Any tips before I get stuck in? With the vanos being so noisy, will it be possible to save the hubs or will they need to be replaced?

Cheers

Maybe the rattle is just a consequence of fluctuating oil pressure...caused by worn camshaft bearing ledge seals - BMW revised them with the new ones made of Teflon.

Thanks for your reply. I will spend some time reading through the links. I did also have a 30C1 code which relates to static oil pressure.

I found today that the fault code changes from the intake to the exhaust when swapping solenoids round. Based on this I've bought a replacement solenoid and I'll see what happens from there. It looks like a previous owner has replaced one solenoid in the past.

Hey man sorry to bring up an old thread.

I'm having the exact same issue right now, I have exhaust vanos code and oil pressure control code (2A87 and 30C1) with the vanos rattle.

How did you go about fixing it. I have been told it's the hubs too but i really need a second opinion before pulling the trigger on that.

Thanks a lot in advance.

You could look to DIY repair it:

Or maybe get in touch with Mr Vanos and get a quote from them to repair

M54 or N52 engine? N52 engine does not have the rubber seals so Dr Vanos kit does not apply. I had VANOS related codes, read out with INPA, all cured with proper cleaning of VANOS solenoids. INPA does not have those generic P codes but proper ones with meaningful human readable description. Of you could get INPA readout that would help. Erase all codes, drive a bit, then read again. Three months after cleaning the solenoids, no errors logged.
