Hi all,

Bought myself a rather lovely 2005 330CD with all of 70k on a clock, full history and immaculate inside and out.

However I've been reading up about various things and one thing that has cropped up is that I'm wondering if it may have a dodgy EGR thermostat.

Temp guage gets up to the middle and stays there in what I would term a normal way, but even driving like a granny at 70 on the motorway getting to 40mpg is all but impossible, when I gather that should be fairly easy to get to.

As such I'm wondering if the EGR thermostat could be the culprit?

Has anyone had any experience of one with a faulty EGR stat where the normal temp guage behaved itself normally?

I had both thermostats fail over 2 weeks, the EGR thermostat didn’t make much difference to running temperature, probably 3-4 °C, the gauge was just SLIGHTLY lower than normal. but it was the water thermostat that made the real difference, probably 15-20 degC.
Sitting in the middle is normal, just confirm that the middle is what you expect it be, an OBD reader and the Torque app will tell you this. I think they should run about the high 80’s low 90’s. others may be able to confirm.

40 mpg at 70 mph is nowhere near enough, I would be getting on the right side of 50 mpg at that speed. Is it boosting properly?
Thankfully the EGR thermostat is not an expensive part and it’s a DIY job, although the other thermostat usually needs changing at the same time, or shortly afterwards….

My cars had both thermostats changed in the past, not uncommon on these!

'Normal' temperature i.e. needle in the middle is anything from 75-115 degrees.

Best way is to use the secret menu on the dash to look at exact coolant temps, it should sit somewhere around 90.

I also agree, you should be seeing around 50mpg at 70.

Is it an auto?

Nope, 6 speed manual. Did nearly 300 miles in her today in light traffic mostly on dual carriageways and motorways, sitting at either about 70, or 50 in the average speed check areas and she did get up to an indicated 41mpg average, but considering that was 2 journeys each 135 miles.

Although having done a quick bit of math on the average tankful mileage the last one was 490 miles indicated done, with 53 litres added when I filled it up, so considering the computer was saying about 38.5MPG average and 53 litres is 11.65 gallons, 490 miles works out at an average of 42mpg, so maybe it's just the computer being pessimistic, as that tankful was mostly longer journeys, but with probably 100 or more miles on B roads and light traffic town, coupled with motorway traffic.

I'm giving her intake manifold and EGT a thorough clean tomorrow, and have now put a full tank of Shell V Power + Redex one off fuel cleaner treatment through her, so maybe I should just keep any eye on how far she does on a tankful and take less notice on the computer.

Want to make sure she is tip top, before she gets a nice remap in the next month or so, although given how well she goes now, I starting to wonder what the heck another circa 25% more power and torque will feel like.
