Hello,

I am looking for advice on what sort of deal I should be looking to drive on a second hand BMW, in this case a 17 plate M140i for sale with Sytners on at £21k with 25k miles.

I would prefer to purchase the car outright but have heard that preferential deals are often offered if BMW finance is taken out. As long as I can pay it off early without penalty I would go for that option.

In your experience what is achievable on:

1. Discounting the asking price? What % is realistic, if at all?

2. Getting more than 1 year BMW warranty thrown in?

3. Are service packs available on 2nd hand cars? If so, what would be a ‘good’ price?

Overall, in your opinion what would you be a good/realistic deal on this car?

I did exactly this, took out BMW finance HP on a pre-reg 340i Touring I bought (as it was easier to sort than PCP), got £1500 off as a result, that they wouldn't take off unless I took the finance and price was it was already very competitive. I paid it off within the 14 day cooling off period over the phone (dead simple and BMW Finance were nice as pie about it) and it cost me £17 in interest so a net £1483 off the price. If you leave it longer than that IIRC you still only pay the interest you've accrued over that period, so if you're going to leave it a little longer it's worth trying to get the HP element of the deal down to as little as possible.

The only additional hassle of doing this is that you have to insure the car as you not owning it for that period then amend it, my insurer made that change FOC though. All in all well worth doing for the discount in question.

RE: Pricing, worth remembering that less than 6 months ago you could get a brand new Shadow Edition M140i for £27-28k.

I've never had that requirement, seems very odd.

When switching insurance I was asked if I was the owner and registered keeper, I was for a short period the latter but not the former.

That has nothing to do with whether the car is financed or not.

IIRC the BMW finance terms document said BMW own the car until the finance is cleared.

I haven't bought a newish BMW since 2008 when I got a 3 month old pre-registered car.

I was told I could buy a Service Pack any time before it had it's 1st service so I did, but if they still work to that limitation you might be out of luck.

Mind you I think the Service Pack these days is more restricted in time and mileage, so you may not be missing too much. The one I bought was for 5 years and 60K miles.

I bought virtually the same AUC car from Sytner BMW last month that the OP described...…...2017, M140, 23k miles. Mine was a straight cash purchase, paid the screen price (which had just been reduced). I asked (and got) a 2year BMW warranty.

Good luck, lovely car and sweet engine smile

So the remainder of the manufacturers warranty + 1 year? Or, a separate 2 year warranty?

RE: Service Packs, they're not like they used to be (unless buying a new factory order car?); they used to be one payment upfront for 5 years. Now it's mainly done on the drip and value wise they only really save you the cost that the services go up by year on year. See here:

Depends on the Sytner dealership. Tamworth (my nearest) won’t discount or reduce the ridiculous APR on used cars but Nottingham seem much more to do so.

The APR on used BMW’s is 12.9% which is nuts. If you can but outright I’d be tempted to do that rather than faff about, especially if they’re not willing to discount / chuck anything in.

They’re great cars by the way, I love mine. It does everything I need it to without fuss.

May I ask which Sytner branch, please?
