Hi,

Looking at either of these and leaning towards the petrol as wife has the X4 3.0d.

Anyone driven both and can offer their wisdom?

Thanks

Get the X3M instead if there are any left on the current deal...

A great, great deal but dearer insurance, a running in service where the others have none + a harder ride ... oh, with worse fuel economy - allegedly . lot worse !

That all said ... 500bhp :-P

If M40i or 40d I would just look at how many miles you do and buy based on that. I do loads of short journeys and only 5K a year ... so went M40i.

Yeah the economy is dreadful round town I'm getting 17mpg plus it's a bit "focused" for the kind of car it is if that's not your thing.

I'd say have a drive in both and see which you prefer. Personally I usually prefer petrol over diesel but when you're talking about an SUV I do wonder if the 40d might suit the character of the car a bit better? If you do a high annual mileage that might tip things in favour of the diesel as well...

Thanks for the replies.

Have already driven the 40i and off tomorrow to test the 40d, I must admit the petrol was a nice change, anyone offer a real world mpg for either model?

Cheers

I have just changed my F80 M3CP for an X3 M40i and am really pleased with it so far.

Fuel economy wise, I am seeing around 22mpg which feels a bit low - so appreciate any thoughts from other owners?

I've done just under 12k in my X3 M40i. My commute is 23 miles and is generally economy favourable (8 miles of it is at 50mph speed limit, 10 miles at NSL, rest is local roads). If I drive hard it's 21mpg, if I make no effort either way it's 28-30mpg, if I try 35mpg is possible. My lifetime average for the car is 29.4mpg. Longer trips are easily over 30mpg if you stick to cruise at 70. Hoof it around town or just short runs and it's mid-high teens.

Have a 40d on order myself. Allegedly 39mpg is the average for that.

23mpg from my M40i over 4k miles for a 4 miles each way commute and once a week 35 miles ish trip each way to a friend. Less than my M240i but less miles on it - that did about 27/28mpg for the same journey but had 8K on it.

Can you explain the above statement? You don't like the X4 3.0d & feel the petrol would be better?

Missus is on her second M40i (okay its an X4 but same thing) and averaging around 28mpg, creeping into the 30s on the motorway.

She loves it (3rd one coming in Feb - the perks of working for the Bavarians) and I do like the way it sounds on a cold start up.

I’ve had a X3 40d for just over a month, and with quite a bit of motorway driving have a 42mpg average.

Very impressed with the car so far, and with similar performance to the petrol version the better consumption won me over. I came from an F31 335d, and was unsure how the additional size of the car would change my driving experience - but find myself ‘wafting’ along generally, but still with decent performance when needed.

Just for clarity: The wife has an X4 30d and we are changing it to an X3 M40d or M40i not sure which model yet, but looking likely to be the 40d, just looking for some feedback from other owners before we commit.

Thanks

I suppose the extra 400kg over the M3 has to tell somewhere. It's a lot of extra weight to get moving.

22mpg around town feels about right. My old 440i was a fair bit lighter than your X3 and didn’t have 4wd drive train losses. That could dip to the low 20s around town and mid 20s was realistic.

I’ve got a 2.5 tonne diesel SUV (Disco) now and that’s on a par with your M40i around town, or worse, if that makes you feel any better!

I’m looking to change the wife’s 2016 X4 30d with a lightly used X4 M40d or M40i.

I always prefer petrol but am having a real dilemma between the 40d and 40i. She does 8-10k miles/yr with a daily stop/start 5 mile commute into the city and then mainly 50-80 mile runs a couple of times a month.

I’ve tried to get test drives in both but not many dealers have them.

I love the idea of the 40i but as this is the family bus I dont really want the 15mpg I get in my V8 M3...

Don’t suppose you recognise YG68PRB do you? It’s an ex-mgmnt X4 M40i that’s up for sale now.

Don't think it was ours. Although did have a 68 plate and they all start with a Y. Black metallic, oyster interior, all the toys.

They do get looked after - 6 months/9k of use and you get marked down on any scratches/scuffs etc. Too many and you have to pay!

60k list price though so god knows how much they lose at re-sale. It's all about those registrations though

I would think the fact she manages a decent drive twice a month is ok but the short commute will kill the diesel particulate filter if those longer journeys are not done. I went from a 12 miles each way A road commute to a 4 miles in traffic commute. I had no longer journeys and it killed the DPF in terms of destroying my fuel consumption in 6 months !

It went from 55mpg to 25mpg ! I used DPF cleaner by Forte. It sorted the fuel issue and it went back up to a more acceptable amount per gallon once the DPF was cleaner. It did teach me the commute was rubbish for a diesel as it doesn't get warm and the car was sold. As a result I got an X3 M40i - it is at 4k miles so new, and I get 23mpg out of it. I think my journeys would kill an M40d.
