i8 Petrol cap not opening
Discussion
Had this problem twice now, 2 years in between faults. Local BMW garage in Hull not very helpful. I could not open it with the manual release this time. So I called the AA. If you have this problem either get BMW to sort it, if under warranty. Or remove the back wheel (offside next to the petrol cap). Remove a few screws on the wheel arch inside trim pull slightly back shine a torch and you can see the electric connection and the locking pin. You can pull off the connection push back the pin and don't reconnect. You can still open and close the petrol cap by pushing on it. But it wont lock.
Go to the boot and pull the green release valve. Not too hard or it will flip off. Report it to BMW but this is known to happen if petrol is very low/empty. Fuel tank pressure sensors can fail, the sensor is integrated into the fuel pump. Can get them recalibrated which might resolve but may need a new sensor/pump. Warranty job. 2nd gen sensors don't fail like the earlier ones
Ok.
Reason I asked, it that I had a PHEV the other day, none BMW, where it’s filler cap wouldn’t release, unless I cycled the ignition.
In the case of that car, it had a low fuel pressure sensor (looked like a solenoid to me) on the filler neck, that was faulty. The engine ECU was looking for a handshake from it, before releasing the filler cap.
I was just wondering if the I8 had the same.
