I had the water pump and thermostat replaced today. I drove the car home, about 25mins away, and everything was running great. When I got to my driveway, I got a call and left the engine running while I was on bluetooth call. I was on the call for less than five minutes when I heard a thud and then steam and coolant spewing everywhere, I shut the engine off immediatly, within 3 seconds of seeing steam and hearing the hissing sound. Anyway, I lifted the bonnet and found the top radiator hose had snapped off. Would this hose be related to water pump and thermostat change?

No.

Waterpump & stat are bottom left on the above image, your hose has failed top right of the image.

Ah I see, thank you. I guess it was just a coincidence then.

Well I suppose it's possible the new pump highlighted an issue with the hose that the old tired pump running at lower pressure didn't.

It's still a pain though!

I do wonder if there are any other hoses they should replace while the car is with them tomorrow. Any suggestions?

It's not the hoses fault generally when they pop off, it's the crappy one-use hose clamps that are originally used on the engine. Replacing most of these with better jubilee clamps, properly fitted, will be fine unless the hose itself is starting to fail and leak. With yours, I would bet the hose clamp has not held properly, and the resulting movement in the hose being pushed off has caused the end of it to split off (ironically if a hose itself is failing it will tend to leak, reduce pressure and reduce the possibility of it popping off - since yours popped that would indicate the hoses themselves are currently not leaking).

I had hoses popping off everywhere on my N52 when the water pump was replaced. As noted above I think it is the increased pressure that the new pump brings, combined with old hose clamps.

Just had a call and they said the same thing. I've had my alternator replaced recently and the previous mechanic had remove that hose and with the new water pump, the increased pressure was the final straw for it.

They said tomorrow they'll fit the new upper radiator hose and get the water pump to run at full pressure again to be sure no other hoses will pop off.
