Hi, could someone help me with a bit of model info please ?

I see that the 535D was not directly replaced inthe 2017 facelift , but there's now 530d and 530d Xdrive (which i think is the slightly quicker one) - but both the BHP seems to be down on the the last 535d. Is the performance comparable ?

I'm looking at a 2016 535d, for a little bit extra i might stretch to the 2017 car, but not sure what's out there ?

Alternatively, there are some 640d from 2016 (gran coupe) now looking very good value, but thats probably for a another topic.

thanks very much.

Let's get some of the formalities out of the way - the 5 series wasn't facelifted in 2017, it was replaced. The previous model was the F10/F11, the new one is the G30/G31. As such there's a decent price jump between the last of the F10 models and the first of the new G30's.
The 535d ceased to be from 2016; it was replaced in the G30 by the 540d, but not in the UK. So if you definitely want Diesel, you're limited to the 520d and 530d. You could go petrol & get into a 540i of course. Your 640d suggestion might not be a bad one, although rear headroom is limited. You can get a 740d too of course; the 7 series was renewed in 2016, and personally I think they're fantastic looking & great value.

If you are after a saloon, the 7 series makes more sense if buying new.
It is on a different level imho and often cheaper than the 5 series the same age and milage.

Some of the prices before xmas were silly cheap. A 66 plate 740iL for £23k at a main dealer, that was a £90k car new.

If I didn't need estates that is what I would be in.

Thanks for clearing that up.

The 7 is a delight but the 2016s are still mostly north of £20k, which I'm very keen not to exceed, but as you say cracking value when you'll pay the same price for 2017 5 series.

Only option for “factory” 35d level of power in the UK is the Alpina D5 but even that’s neutered compared to the EU D5.

740d would get my money if you want to stick to a big saloon or If you want to stick to a 5 series I’d go for a G30 540i. I moved from a 2016 remapped 535d to an M4 a couple of months back and average economy isn’t that shocking really - down by only 10mpg and I enjoy the smell of filling up again.

Hey?

Cheapest new shape (2017) 5 series with 6 cylinders is £22k on autotrader, 7 series with around the same milage is £23k asking.

No brainier when they’re that close!

Yup, a few G30 540i's and 530d's for sub £22k. The 7 series would still be tempting to me though.

Was in a similar position 2yrs ago, 540i or 640i and I went for a 640i as the interior is much nicer, especially if you get a good colour combo.
