X5 G05 2018 onwards - any owners here?
Discussion
Hi,
I have a nearly 7 year old E70 X5 40d (with sports suspension deleted) running on the 20" 333 style wheels. Yesterday I test drove a couple of G05 x5s - one with 21" wheels and another with 22" wheels. Both cars had air suspension.
This post is primarily about drive and ride/comfort. I was really impressed with the interiors, the tech etc. The 30d against my 40d in terms of power felt a bit less potent but more refined I would say.
Anyway, in terms of drive/ride I was a bit disappointed. The car on 21" wheels seemed very smooth but occasionally was way too "floaty" to the point where I noticed it bobbing around like a boat, my young son can get car sick and I found myself thinking this would not help with that. Both cars felt less direct in terms of feedback from the car, I guess they are more "electronic" these days.
I was expecting the 22" wheeled car to be a real bone shaker but it seems the air suspension compensates for that - I recall the E70 and possibly the F15 were quite firm rides even on smaller wheels than I tried. I think I enjoyed the drive and ride of the 22" car the most, it felt less "floaty" / boat effect also.
I recently drove a Velar which I think had 22" wheels and air suspension and both my wife and I felt it was a more pleasant drive/ride/comfort. I have always bought BMW but there's a decision to make now, I just wondered how other owners have found this generation of X5 in terms of drive and comfort, and with what wheel size? I appreciate it will be a personal view and subjective.
Thanks
S
