Is my beautiful BMW dead
Discussion
Bought a beautiful BMW 1 Series convertible last year.
2 days ago the fuel pump disintegrated and I have been told there is metal throughout the fuel system. The very basic information the garage has told me is that it needs cleaning, the engine taken out to change the fuel pump and also injectors to be changed.
I chd Jed and the engine does not need to be taken out to change the fuel pump.
Currently the garage is not giving me a price and saying that they they don't have time to do the work.
Is my car dead or how do I get to get a second opinion when the car can't move and is stuck at the garage.
Really could do with the PistonHeads possy giving me some help here thanks very much

The garage definitely doesn't want to take the job on.
Simple as that. They don't want the job (or aren't convinced they are even capable of it) Get it out of there before you end up with a striped down car and a big bill!
I guess you aren't capable of doing any DIY work on it?
Find another garage/specialist who will do the job.
It's clearly a pita job that the garage view as more hassle than it's worth for them. They will take ages cleaning out the fuel system, and the potential for then to miss a bit and you come back with "you didn't do your job properly and now I'm claiming for a new engine..." is massive.
In theory nothing got past the filter, so ou only need to replace components between the pump and filter. Look for a car on eBay being broken for parts and take what you need from there, and instead of using an original pump use a Bosch 044.
If you cut the filter open to find the media has been compromised then there could be metal in the rail & injectors.
First port of diagnostic call is to remove, open and inspect the filter to determine how to approach the next step.

have you inspected the filter yet? what did you see? this will tell you what you need to know, and so what you need to buy.
I wouldn't expect there to be filter after the high pressure pump. Unless you mean that re-circulated fuel could leave debris in the filter.OP - How old is the car? I've seen suggestions BMW in the US extended the fuel pump warranty to 10 years.

Here are a couple of recent threads on the subject.
My experience of this has always been negative, but I've only recovered the cars, not repaired them.
Good luck!

The job should cost about £1000-1500.
Reconditioned HPFP, or a used one after making sure the cam isn't knackered on the replacement. Four used injectors. Used rail and sensors. Blow the fuel lines through with carb/brake cleaner and compressed air. New filter and replace/clean the lift pump - the good money is on replacing it. The tank stays in but is drained and a magnet swept across the base (inside) to get the filings and then cleaned and dried inside. It's best to replace the filter after 500 miles.

Is that a commercial price or the cost of parts? You certainly seem to know what you're talking about - having seen your posts on one of the other threads.Reconditioned HPFP, or a used one after making sure the cam isn't knackered on the replacement. If that's a commercial price, whereabouts are you in the UK? I still have a broken X3 in the yard which belongs to a mate. He hasn't had a quote over here (Belgium) under €5k - admittedly using all new parts. It might be worth looking at coming over to the UK...

Just got a quote for £2.5k, the car is just over 9 years old, but could look if the pump should have been recalled.5 years ago, I was working on my own cars, but now I travel a lot for work and don't have a garage, so need to leave it to a professional.
Let me know if you fancy the job Touring442?
