As I’m feeling the love for the old girl , full service yesterday , mot today , it passed but a few advisories , mainly the front shocks misting oil less damping effect they said

So what front shocks do I buy ? And from where , had a look on ecp there’s a few options, happy to buy something decent for it as have no intentions of selling it , it’s our 2nd car , used for the family chores , tip runs , mtb days

Any recommendations please

Bone Sachs Super Touring is about right and certainly best quality. Bilstein B4's may be mentioned but the chromed damper rod is too long for an M Sport unless they have made a specific M Sport version.

If you want to go budget, I've never had issues with ECP's Anschler dampers. I've found KYB to be utter crap.

If the rear dampers look old and rusty, replace those as well as they're never far behind. Careful when you change the fronts - the 18 mm strut clamp bolt can snap off. Lots of WD40 the day before! Then ease them out, forwards/backwards to get them moving. You will also need new bump stops - I buy these as a kit from Amazon for about 15 quid, Boge/Sachs damper protection kits. Your originals will be shafted by now.

They do; Bilstein 22-139931 and 22-139948 are the front B4's for M Sport cars.

Rears are 19-103112, same both sides.

If you want an upgrade Bilstein B6s are great. Much better ride quality due to internal bump stops. Despite suspension theory they work well with standard rear dampers.

Thxs for the reply’s , although this has now been put to back of list as car has sucked all the oil from turbo into the inlet manifold !!
I’ve had a feeling turbo was on its way out for a few years now so time to put the 1 I bought 2 years ago on tomorrow! Great fun

Dampers. You don’t have shocks, you have dampers.

Make sure you clean all of the oil out of the inlet manifold and intercooler or the car can run on its own oil when the new turbo is fitted.

I’m sure you know about priming the turbo and all that stuff. When it’s running let it idle for a few minutes.

Plus the catalytic converter ing the downpipe. Engine cleaner and a hose cleans them out. When a turbo has failed I just fit a new intercooler, 100 quid from Euros or wherever.

Indeed, the spring absorbs the shocks, the damper damps the spring!

Not an E46, but replaced all the shocks on my E39 touring with the specific Sachs Mtech Sport spec shocks via RTGroup, Leyland via their eBay store. Genuine items and best prices I could find, worth having a look smile

Thought about going to Bilstein B6s or B8s but decided to keep it as OEM as possible and they ride superbly, more so with the Eibach pro-kit springs wink

Well, the spring will adjust the height according to the load. If that load is applied suddenly (i.e. as a ‘shock’) the dampers will reduce the rate of that shock-loading on the spring.
