Hi all has anyone on here had any similar problems or maybe an idea what the issue may be ?
F30 328 sounds like it is going to stall when idling , when putting the foot down on the accelerator pedal the car is juddering and seems to be getting worse . It’s only started this evening and within the space of an hour seems barely drivable and the cars stinks of sulphur..

I’ve read it could be the cat or even oxygen censor amongst a long list of possible faults .

Any help appreciated
Thanks

Coils quite likely, especially if it's not running on all cylinders.

What coils are they ? Been told from an Indy the worst case scenario is £2000 for what I thought sounded like a complete kit from Bmw . That’s just what they think it sounds from my description.

Thanks again

First things first, read the codes.

That should give you an idea of which cylinder the misfire is on.

Then when you know which cylinder, swap the coil between cylinders and see if the misfire follows it.

Coil packs are no where near 2 grand btw. Not even super special gold plated ones fitted by the trainee tech at BMW.

They are probably about 40 quid each from Eurocarparts.

It’s booked in for a diagnostic at main dealer tomorrow so we’ll see! The Indy mentioned it would be going up to £2000 for sensors, plugs coil packs etc .. fingers crossed it is just £40

Heya! Saw this and thought I'd ask, I've often got a BMW that needs the codes needing reading I'm running down to my garage haha. Do you run a garage or was this a generous offer from one private individual to another? I'm St.Albans way myself.

Quarry Motors. I use them from time to time for tricky diagnostics.

Sytners will have your pants down and use your ar5e crack as a credit card swiper.

The engine has lost all compression in cylinder 1 and possibly ruined the car and sensors etc... cylinder head off is needed to determine if it’s a piston or the engine itself . Either way it’s a full strip down and very costly .

The car is full main dealer service history and only 48k miles albeit it’s a 2013 ‘62 plate . Do we think I’ve got a leg to stand on when it comes to getting a good will gesture from Bmw ?

Ah heck, now that is a pain in the bum!!

First things first though, if its lost compression on one cylinder, the first job is not to pull the cylinder head off ffs. Flipping bmw dealers!! Few things can be done to ascertain the actual issue:

1. Leak down test to ascertain whether its losing compression from the valves/headgasket/pistons
2. Inspection camera down the spark plug hole to inspect the top of the piston
3. Rocker/valve cover off to check the valve springs. A snapped one will stop the valve sealing the cylinder, giving you zero compression.
4. If its a valve spring snapped, pull the inlet/exhaust off to see if the valve is bent or not, if its a snapped valve spring but the valve is still straight you dont need to pull off the head to change it

I’ve always used quarry motors on previous BMWs as well but with this being bought from BMW, serviced by BMW with the low mileage and to be honest my lack of options I’ve ended up in this position .

Where do any of you think I may stand with help from the dealer/ bmw Uk as I’ve got the impression this could be a large bill .

Full dealer history bought from a dealer with low mileage for the age

Sack them off and get it to either Quarry or Parkside in Worksop.

BMW will need to be offering you a serious goodwill deal for you to keep it there.

The dealer has agreed to cut there rate to £50 per hour but that being said they’ll just take slightly longer to do the job. It’s having the work done there as I feel I should be well within my rite to expect some help from bmw on this due to the cars mileage and service history ?

I hope so anyway otherwise this could be the last bmw I own and this is the 3rd ..

You need a proper cast iron quote before they lay a spanner on it.

Otherwise you will own a 328i with the engine in bits in the boot and a big bill to take it apart. Up to you.

11 hours labour they’ve told me to strip the top and bottom of the engine and put it back but that doesn’t include the fix as they are unsure what the cause is until they’ve got it out ...

I’m not no mechanic just know the very basics so putting some trust in them and also with a view that as I said earlier I feel I should be well within my rite to expect some help from bmw over this .

To say I’m fked off is an understatement

I know i mentioned this before, but please get a leak down test done before pulling the engine apart, that will point you in the direction of the issue straight away: https://mobiloil.com/en/article/car-maintenance/ca...

The issue you have with main dealers is that they are mostly trained fitters, not actual mechanics, so they may not know about actual engine hardware diagnosis. The face they are telling you the head needs to come off before they have an inkling of the issue proves that they are indeed, morons. A leakdown test will tell them straight away where the issue lies.

For example, the valve stems went on my RS3. This was fairly obvious from the symptoms, blue smoke on cold start only, ie oil leaking down into the cylinder head overnight. It took 3 months for the Audi dealer to diagnose the same, pulling apart the engine engine in the process. In reality, all they needed yo do was whip off the rocket cover & replace the valve stems. But they didnt do that as they didnt know the basics.

I bought my last 325i on the basis that it had lost compression and bmw wanted to pull the head off it. Cost = thousands. In reality, the head stayed on and i swopped a valve spring out. Cost = £7 plus some gaskets. Correct diagnosis is required here i feel.
