Hi all

Have an N54 135i. Car flashed up to add 1 litre of oil, which I did. I then ordered another 1 litre to keep in the boot.

It turned up today and doesn't say BMW Longlife-04 on this bottle, which is very strange.

Old bottle on the left and new one on the right - you can see the left one has "BMW Longlife-04" and the right one doesn't.

Any thoughts?

Potentially castrol havnt recently reknewed their type-approval with BMW, so cant put it on their bottles. However I expect that overal the formulation of the oil hasnt changed significantly, in which case there'd be no issue in using it.

Yup, same spec, same stuff.
You can use anything as long as it's the same spec so I wouldn't worry too much.

Never had any car, (BMW, Ford, Volvo, Skoda, diesel or petrol) that needed topping up between services, apart from between new and first service).

Interestingly Opie Oils now states the following:

https://www.opieoils.co.uk/p-716-castrol-edge-tita...

"Please note that this product no longer specifies BMW-LL04 so we have removed that spec from our listing.

We do sell Castrol Edge 5w-30 M FST Fully Synthetic Car Engine Oil which lists LL04 in its specifications."

Lol Pica. And what cars/engine sizes/mileage are we talking? Mine is 3 litre twin turbo and I drive it pretty hard so it gets through a litre of oil every 6-7k. It's pretty normal for a lot of cars . Here you go mate wink

Of course you haven't.

Have you ever joined a thread to do something other than say something polar opposite?

The most important bits are the fact they are long life and low in ash for LL04. To be fair, the low ash doesn't really matter with petrol, it is more to stop the dpf getting too blocked up.

To be fair, I haven’t topped up oil between changes since a 190e 2.6 I had in the early 90s.

Since then, none of the 10 cars we’ve had have needed it, including my 7, though that’s only doing a couple of thousand miles a year.

Edited to add: one of those cars was a Mitsubishi VR4 with 4500 mile service intervals!

I'm currently on my 5th and 6th petrol 6 cylinder BMWs and they have all needed top ups between services - it seems to be normal with these engines!

The reason Castrol don't mention LL04 may be that according to my BMW Indy BMW now use Shell Helix Ultra - so you might find that with LL04 on the container. thumbup

Not a brag, just a statement of fact about my experience of oil fills between services. To repeat: never, zero, zilch.
Also, do you always only want to hear from people who agree with you?

Yes, BMW seem to recommend Shell, some tie-in of sorts, I guess.

I was told it was because Castrol wouldn't supply it to BMW without a Castrol logo on the container, but Shell would!

Just wondering, but have you ever owned a BMW?

I doubt if Shell would supply anything to anybody with a Castrol logo on it ! smile

BTW: Castrol no longer exists, it is just a marketing brand of the BP company.

Yes, from 1998 till present time. 2017 handbooks say ‘BMW recommends Shell Quality Fuels’. No mention of recommended oil brand, just grades. I used Shell Helix Ultra.

Ha! Did I ask if people think its normal to top up engine oil in between services? Or did I ask a completely different question to the one that you decided to answer?

So you've owned a bmw, but how about a tuned N54, pushing 400hp? A small amount of oil consumption is perfectly normal with the N54 even when not tuned.

Exactly.

I've only had 1 M54, 4 N52s and an S54, but they all used a bit of oil!

And to respond to an earlier post by "Locknut" (w*nker) Shell obviously wouldn't put a Castrol logo on their container, but Shell are willing to supply to BMW with no Shell logo, whereas Castrol would supply to BMW but insisted on a Castrol logo being displayed.

Sorry this seems to have gone a bit off-topic OP. rolleyes
