Hi,

anyone out there have wipers that just seem to go into highspeed mode at the slightest sign of sustained rain? if so do BMW do a program update to make it more sensible?

I end up having to take it out of auto and into manual wipers to slow it down.

Cheers

H

Does it ever work correctly... As in the odd wipe when there’s not much rain ?

it seems to sit there fine and fires up normally to clear intermittent rain. soon as its sustained rain. ie rain that you would clear with continuous normal wiper speeds, it does this for a few seconds then bursts into overdrive without any increased rain flow.

I think mine (F31) can be a little fast.
There are coding options for wipers in Carly so I think it’s fixable.

I just presume they’re crap rain sensors. I’ll have mine on maximum sensitivity, it’ll be pissing it down, and they won’t wipe.

I can change the sensitivity down a notch (lower sensitivity) and it’ll do a wipe, then it seems to start working properly.

The sensitivity dial on mine, appears to be more of a ‘reset’.

Exact same on my F11 & F20. They will never come on by themselves, but once on they're ok.

My F30 wipers are in the "under sensitive" category. In automatic mode the windscreen is sometimes covered in droplets before the wipers give a flick. I often have to turn on the manual high or low speed to clear the windscreen.

The automatic mode seems to be rubbish in some BMWs. My daughters had a Peugeot and a Renault which are often regarded as unreliable, but the automatic wipers always worked perfectly. So it can't be that difficult to make them properly.

You can program sensitivity with various OBD devices.

I use Carly to do it to alter the sensitivity.

Can go as far as seat heat temp all way to fault code reading DPF monitoring all sorts .

Mine are generally OK (F30 LCI 335d), but there is the odd occasion where the ‘wrong type of rain’ means they are slow to switch on or wipe. One advantage of having the auto wipers on is that the stalk is still in the neutral position and a quick flick-wipe is possible. Also, if you are on auto-wipe and get a sudden deluge from a vehicle coming the other way, it immediately reacts quicker than a human.

Same here - definitely over-sensitive. Most of the time I stick them on manual.

F48 X1 - Heavy rain and they go slow. Light rain and they go fast. Had them looked at but nothing found amiss. They're just crap.
Remember those where you could adjust the intermittent interval yourself? Much better. I have them on my Cayman.

I use RainX or I still have the Mer equivalent and then I can pretend I’m going into hyperspace when I accelerate... getmecoat

Seriously though it’s so effective I hardly need the wipers in most rain.

Hmm - that’s interesting. I have an LCI F32 and to switch on the auto wipers, I have to physically move the wiper stalk up 1 position so it’s not in the neutral position for a flick-wipe. I wonder why they’re different.

Same sort of thing here (F31). One of the many areas where a man in an office in Munich is supposed to know more about what is needed than the man at the wheel looking out of the window. The book of words does not tell me that I can switch the rain sensor off and regain control, let alone how to do so.

I take it from auto to just normal wipe, seems to be ok.
At least it wipes unlike the E91 before it.
