Seen a 48,000 mile 98 e36 323i saloon..thing is its super clean avus blue no rust mint interior drives OK (haven't had it upto Mway speeds) but it has zero history.
Mots add up and its got advisories for brake lines and oil leaks.
Clonky 1st gear when cold (it's auto)
Tyres are ancient as well.
should walk but the fact its so clean makes me wonder whats the worst that can happen ha ha ha for reference it's £1500 has mot left but thinking how much would that little recommission cost for potentially a really nice little e36 to smoke around in

E36's are notorious for rust so if it's rust free that's a good sign.

Budget for a gearbox service and take a punt!

My e46 had no service history and about 11 owners! She'd clearly had been looked after but between owners the history had been misplaced /lost.
6 months later she's pretty dependable.

Fluid change might help the auto box.

What's the body like?

Assuming it's on OE 16s, tyres should be cheap.

Is it a late or early '98 car?

Avus blue could be the M Sport version BMW did as a run out in 1998 - they were just 323i's for some reason. It's worth 1500 quid all day long if it's clean. The worst that can happen is that it needs another gearbox (unlikely) - £150 and 4 hours on the ramp to fit it.

It's an SE saloon on an S plate not a sport unfortunately! No rust on any arches sills etc. Just looks genuine low miles but no history. Engine is quiet as a mouse too. Requires brake lines and has an oil leak.. Forgot what a nice compact size these are compared to modern stuff

It's become less attractive.....

But these are a decent place to put money. Buy right and don't spend loads on it, and it's free motoring. Late ones are South African built though so check the sills etc very carefully. They can rot like a bd.

They did this with the last mk3 Golf's as well if I recall and they were all crust buckets.. Its now sold to someone else anyway which may be a blessing. I've also got a hankering after another mk5 r32 but a manual this time and they appear to be pretty much bottomed out price wise.
