Moved to a new area and asked the local indie to do an oil change on my 335d as OBC was telling me it needed changing.
Before I let them loose I asked if they are able to update the car computer to show the service had been done and he checked around and confirmed he can (don’t know if he’d done this before).
I picked up the car and all of the service indicators seem to have been reset and surprise surprise the computer hadn’t been updated.
He showed me on bmw online that he’d updated the bmw computer but it wasn’t showing on the car.
To make matters worse, the key is now saying that the battery needs replacing and I have no idea what next needs servicing for example, I’m sure the front break pads were due in 3k miles but now it’s showing it’s not due for another 18k miles which is obviously wrong.

Any ideas how i can rectify this?

Really gutted I took it to this garage

Your brake pads will have a wear indicator on them - when they are low, the computer will detect this and will tell you. In any case, if you know they are due in a few thousand miles, then just get them changed in a few thousand miles.

I'm sure info can be reset to indicate custom intervals, maybe speak to someone else. In any case, keep a note of the mileage / date and go on that for your next set of servicing (I presume you know what has been done in he past, and you can work out when all items are scheduled based on time or miles - whichever comes first).

As for the battery, it happens, they can die - you should be able t get that changed easily (not sure if it needs to be recoded afterwards? google is your friend there)

You might find your idrive updates over the next few days.

He fills out the online form, BMW updates their end and then sends that info back to your car.

The brake wear indicator is rubbish anyway. Just look at that pads.
If you get down to around 1500 miles remaining you will get a second warning anyway, think it says 900 miles left.
Just keep an eye on them, look at how much is left every fortnight or so.

Hopefully it will update automatically.

Was just a bit worried that all of the service indicator requirements were reset to what looked like maximum so I’ve no idea about the other serviceable items.

The garage also said it looked like the break pads were almost new, they aren’t, but what gets me is how the key is now showing as needing a new battery. The timing can’t be coincidence

Why?

What age is the car?

I have changed the batteries on my F11 keys, it is a 64 plate and now just over 5 years old.

It may be that because the key was nearer the car for a longer time than normal it just showed it up more, the key keeps talking to the car when it is within 10m or so.

If you use the spare fob in the car, is that reporting “low battery”, too ?

I’ll give that a try later

Car is a 2015 but too coincidental for the key fob battery to need replacing during the service

Unfortunately that won't happen...as BMW don't provide that service.

Yes they do.

Indi garages can register for free.

Back to the first post.... I presumed the car’s service settings get reset via the OBD socket or Idrive. That and any other information is then periodically transmitted to the key.

Or have I got that wrong ?

No not really, batteries on these last around 5-8 years.
Alot depends how far away from your car you keep your key.
Not a good idea with these to keep your car a few feet from the front door and your keys by the door.

Taking it in for a service they have properly left it in the car while working on it, if the battery was on its last legs sitting there talking to the car for a few hours may have been enough to get it low enough to get the message up.

Just go and and buy a new battery for a quid.
Sod it, go all out and spend £2, get one for the spare key as well. wink

This is my understanding too

My local indy is doing brakes on mine this week for the first time.

He asked if I wanted the service history updating, as that is a small extra fee due to the fact they
"have to send it off to BMW to be updated"

Yeah, it is a bit of a pain as they have to log in and fill out all the details, but garages really do need to think about doing this.

Interesting phenomenon I found out the other week with our BMWs

If I have the key fob in the same pocket as my mobile phone, the car will not start on the cars start button and reports key fob low battery in the instrument binnacle.

Assume this shields/interferes with the signals. Separate them and no problem!

BMW don't send it to the car,the garage can put it into the BMW online system and then car via the BMW portal which they have to be registered too and which BMW do charge.

Did they never activate the over the air updates then?

They announced it a few years back, so if an indi garage updated through their Aftersales Online System the idrive would be updated over the air, thus not needing to plug in ISTA via ICOM.

I bet they thought as long as they had met all block exemption rules then why make it easier for indis?

No.... and for some reason to put it into the cars system you cant use Wifi you literally have to plug the car into your computer and log in this takes about 15 minutes to process you also have to buy blocks of tokens in advance one token per entry so BMW are getting there money in advance that's why a lot of indys don't do it.

Yeah, I knew you had to buy tokens, and in blocks of 50 too. Not sure how much they are each? Not much I guess?

Pain in the arse really, and with apps to update it anyway, sort of defeats the idea anyway.

Mega. So based on this thread I’ve very little chance of having the OBC updated correctly and the rest of the service intervals set back to where they were.
