Hey guys

Needed some advice and obviously PH is considered the best place when it comes to cars.

So nearly 2 years ago i purchased a 2006 Z4 2.0 and have loved it ever since. Only thing i have found is that it is somewhat lacking in terms of performance. I have also been told that you cant really do much with the 2.0 engine to get any more from it (or noting to get any gain worth while)
So my question is, can i replace the engine with the 3.0 and is it worth it?
The body on mine is absolutely mint and the 3.0 models are now worth far more than the 2.0 so if it is possible is it cost effective?

Any help will be greatly appreciated

Sounds like quite a lot of bother to do the engine replacement. Would you be doing the work yourself? I'd imagine v expensive otherwise.

Honestly, I'd just buy a 3.0. The earlier M54 engine 3 litre models don't seem to be crazy money. It's the later 3.0Si (N52) engines (in good specs) that are holding their values well.

Well currently i believe my car is worth £2K at a push. The 3.0 alternatives fetch around £8k.
I can pick up an engine with fairly low milage for around £600. I would be getting a garage to fit it as I lack to tools and knowledge for something this large.
Another question is what else would need to be replaced. I am aware of uprating breaks etc but would i need a new gear box and electronics or would it fit fairly easily?

I have a nice complete N54 335i sat here.

Engine, turbos, gearbox, the lot.

That would make a good little project.

Personally I think it would be easier to just sell the car and buy a 3 litre!

There are all sorts of potential issues. Non-M Z4s always had electric PAS, but the M54 engine fitted to the E46 3 Series had hydraulic PAS as did the early E9* 330is with the N52 engine.

3 litre Z4s have bigger front brakes, and I'm sure there would be loads of other issues.

If you really want to do a transplant you might as well go the whole hog and fit an S54 or an LS3 to make it worthwhile!

Just to let you know, doing the engine transplant includes doing the whole wiring harness, ecus, gearbox etc. etc.

It would take a team of 2 a good 5 or so days of work if they knew exactly what they were doing.

Will you use your cluster or the one from the donor car?

If you can't do it yourself forget it.

You can buy a nice Z4 3.0 for around £3500.

I just read this again - you'd never get £8K for a 2 litre with a 3 litre engine in it!

I struggled to get any interest in my all original 3 litre Coupe at £7,500 earlier this year, until I dropped the price to £6,600. frown

Someone on z4forum sold an MR for £10k recently - just don't bother!
