Tyres are wearing out on the wife's E70, it has 20" wheels,so what are the current recommendations on this? Its a 30d, currently on budget tyres but I'm looking at better brands, but confused between run flat and non run flat as well as SUV specific or normal car tyres.

Thank you.

I';ve stuck with the ones that came from factory.

Continental Sport Contact 5 SSR XL * (315/35 R20 110W)

Continental Sport Contact 5 SSR XL *BMW (275/40 R20 106W)

These have the star marking denoting BMW approved. They were cheaper via Halfords, just over 900 for a full set, fitted. They're run flats, but no complaints. They're pretty quiet and definitely not a crashy ride.

Get a quote from a BMW main dealer, you may be surprised.

This - definitely

Whether it's from a dealer on not, with a 4x4 system stay with star marked tyres. The RFT or not debate is a different thread.

Totally agree - I always thought the star marked thing was a load of marketing bks until I fitted some non star tyres to mine. All was ok for a while, but I was in Germany when I noticed a whine from the transfer box which hadn't been there before. On my return, I put a new set of star marked on the car and the whine disappeared ! An expensive lesson learned.

Thanks. I've ordered a set of Pirellis with the star marking.

Just done 2 years and 25k in non run flat or star marked tyres in my x5 40d without any problems.

Michelin latitude sport 3s. Will be putting another set on soon. Far better ride and was able to fix a puncture for £10 which wouldn’t have been possible on run flats.

Not saying the problem doesn’t exist for some people but I took the risk as I really didn’t like the ride on run flats.

I put 4 brand new non run flat, non * rated Michelin Latitudes on my X5 this time last year from Costco. Michelin's website said they were suitable for my car so I ordered a set. They were horrendous, caused a clunk changing 1st to 2nd and violent shuddering and jerking when accelerating.

In the end, Michelin agreed to refund my money. I put a set of * rated Goodyear tyres and they're fantastic, ride is also very good compared to the Pirellis that came off (19"). Car is super smooth again. I was very skeptical about the * rated talk, but wouldn't fit anything else now with a staggered x-drive setup.

The problem only seems to exist where there are staggered tyre sizes.

Weird and interesting as to what causes these issues. It can’t purely be the tyres not being * as I put exactly the same ones on, staggered as well, and didn’t have any problems at all in 25k miles.

It's the transfer gearbox and centre diff. If your tyres are different sizes front to back then the rolling radius will be different and the centre diff will be constantly under stress. That causes the jerking and strange things underneath.

I've had 3 4wd BMWs and experience with the problem. It has only happened with staggered sizes for me - not with the All-Terrains I've got for dirt tracks.
