So, just before the lockdown i bought a cheap but honest and rough round the edges 04 reg Z4 2.2.
The reason for it being cheap is the roof doesn't work properly and after some investigation it appears to be the common issue of where the hydraulic motor sits that moves the roof down/up not draining, filling up with water and fubaring the motor.
The motor works that releases the hood at the top of the windscreen and by pulling the toggle in the boot to release the hydraulics i can manually pull the roof down with the reverse operation then carried out to put the roof back up.
At the moment this is something i am quite happy to continue doing as the car is only going to be for occasional use and i would prefer to put money into improving the mechanical side of things than putting a new motor in.
The question i have is that when the roof is operating as it should (with the motor pulling the hood up / down) does the hood lock when it is in its fully down position or does it just sit flat under its own weight so to speak? Ask as i'm looking to avoid any potential damage with the roof lifting when up to a reasonable speed.
Thanks.

It should lock down.
I'm a coupe owner, so might be wrong.
The roadster owners on Z4-Forum.com will give you a clearer answer, and also tell you how to fix the motor cheaply...and how to stop it happening again.

+1, should lock. If you open the top, and look at the top of the windscreen surround there are bars for it to lock to. When it locks electrically, you can hear them catch and see the roof pull down. I'm a coupe owner, so might be wrong.

You can pay someone about £150 to have the motor refurbed and relocated. "the Z shed" seem to be favoured on the Z4 FB pages.

Thanks for the replies both, looks like a replacement motor is the way to go.
You might not need a new motor, the people I know of that can relocate them can often revive seemingly dead ones too. There is "zedshed" in Cheshire and a few others in Durham, Bristol area and Hook, Hants who you can find/contact via "z4forum.com".
I share your pain at not being able to use your Z4 - I only bought my latest the week before Christmas and haven't done 1,000 miles yet.
