Unfortunately, until you're able to get the codes read, it's just guess work.Car was running ok the day before parked car on drive after work next

Could be a plethora of things, could be something simple.
Check fuel, check battery voltage (should be 12-12.5 when not turned on, 14-14.5v when idling etc) using a multimeter or the hidden menu on the dash (Google how to do this); if it's lower than 12v the car won't crank as not enough juice, time for a new battery
Could also be issues with cam/crank sensor and/or other sensors, hence getting the codes read
But, fully appreciate that we're all in lockdown, so unless this is essential, you may have to sit and wait until you can get it recovered to a garage or get someone to read the codes for you
This is where i get all my help and answers with the E46,where are you in the UK?,maybe someone local will help.

If it's cranking in a healthy manner, I'd put money on it being either the crank or cam position sensor being faulty.
In my experience, batteries today seem to be all or nothing.
In the old days, you'd notice that cranking the car over would start to slow down with an ageing/weak battery, especially in winter time, so you had some warning that the battery was on the way out.
These days, they seem fine, and then suddenly without warning, they're dead.
([i]I went to work in the morning once, same as always, parked up, no lights left on, nothing electrical running. When I came to go home, the battery couldn't even fire the stater motor's bendix gear forward to engage with the flywheel. In the end, I had to walk a mile to the nearest Halfords, buy a new battery, walk a mile back with the battery [I swear batteries gain weight, the further you have to carry them!], and once fitted, the car was fine for another 3 years)
OP: If it is the crank or cam sensor, replace it with a genuine BMW sensor - There are far too many stories about non-OEM BMW sensors failing (especially cheap Chinese ones on ebay).

A weak battery will have all lights on and may let the engine try to start, but then won't start and die from there...In my experience, batteries today seem to be all or nothing.

Went through this myself in my first BMW which was an E436 318 auto; replaced the battery and zero issues after that...
But as you've already said, very likely to be duff crank/cam sensors, or all 2/3!
