Wireless Charger Overheating iPhone
Discussion
I had a BMW wireless charging pad on my 2017 540. Occasionally in the 3 years of ownership it overheated the iPhone which stopped working until I took it off the pad to cool down.
In March this year I changed to a new 340 and hoped that the charging pad would have been improved. The reverse was true, my iPhone now lasts no more than about 20-30 minutes on the charger before freezing (strange term as it actually gets too hot). I run Apple Car Play with Waze which may be a factor but then I also ran that on the previous car.
Anyone had similar issues or know of a fix?

Yes, of course. Otherwise the phone would be damaged.
Do you think there’s any chance that might be hampering the phone’s cooling capacity ?RUSSELLM said:
If you can, I’d try it without any charger initially.
But if a case is definitely required, I guess you’d want it as thin as possible.
Does the BMW charger have a magnet in it, to stop the phone flying about ?
I don’t know if there’s a magnet, probably is though as the phone doesn’t move on it much. But if a case is definitely required, I guess you’d want it as thin as possible.

I’ll also try my iPhone on the charger without the case.
Seen this on YouTube (mini clubman but still BMW and same issue). Haven't watched it yet but might be of use.

Well it’s taken this long for me to try a journey where I could try using the iPhone on the charging pad without its case. The result was that it took longer to stop working due to overheating. After an hour that was it, the phone turned itself off until I took it off of the charging pad and gave it time to cool down.
I’ll try again with Mrs BC’s newer iPhone.

I’d say that’s your problem. Waze is a massive battery suck, so the charger is working overtime to keep the phone charged. I’ve found my phone gets very hot running Waze, even with a cable power source. Running over CarPlay makes no difference, as all that’s doing is sending the screen to the car, the processing is still being done by the phone. What happens when you charge with a cable and run Waze?
I have an aftermarket wireless charger on my F36 and no issues at all with overheating, and that’s running Spotify on it almost constantly with the phone in a case.
I did manage to overheat an iPhone 6 using CarPlay though as it was pretty resource-hungry on an older phone - not in a BMW though.
