Which engine on old shape 1 Series 3 or 4 cylinders

Anyone give driving experience on these models please

Having owned a 118d,116i &118i F20 models.
Motorway driving the 118d was excellent, torque was good near 50 mpg.
116i four cylinder ) always seemed a rough sounding rattling engine when cold .
My favourite is the 3 cylinder 1.5 118i , not quick but ample power , very quiet & smoother than the 116i , uses more fuel though. Low 40mpg driving like miss Daisey, motorway high 30s.
