Hi Everyone, I've been looking at a car for the weekends and for the odd road trip

I always like 3 series coupes with their NA straight 6, I would love an E46 330ci, but I think they are a bit too old, and rust would be a concern for me as I won't be able to garage this car.

Having a look I saw that 6 series 630ci/i are at the same price range as an E92 330i. I think for the amount of spec and please correct me if I am wrong but the same running gear its quite of a bargain. Or is there something I am missing? Just for the record I am looking at manual 330i/630i

Now I am more tempted to get a nice cruiser like a 6 series, 630i manual. Is there something I should be looking or same thing as 330i N52 reliability ?

I don't have experience of either, but have had my 55 plate manual E90 330i for just over a year and have been really pleased with it.

I prefer the looks of the E46, but finding one that isn't rusty is getting harder all the time and anyway the E90 is a bit more powerful!

The E90s come pretty well-specced as standard, with leather, dual-zone climate, cruise, etc. but I imagine the 630i would have a few more features and buyers might have been tempted to tick a few more option boxes on a 6 than a 3!

The only downside is that the 6 is physically bigger and slightly heavier so may not be quite as quick if that matters to you, but I've noticed a few post March 2006 models that fall into the £500+ a year road tax band. That doesn't apply to the N53 engines, but by all accounts they can suffer from other issues!

But as a long distance cruiser I can definitely see the appeal of a 630i for the same money as an E92 330i. thumbup

I've been looking at both.

6 Series generally have better spec, almost all have heated seats + pro nav. Other spec is very variable. Manual 6 Series is quite rare.

6 Series is quite a bit bigger than the E92. However, rear leg room is worse (may or may not matter to you).

I'd have thought brakes, suspension components and tyres would be a step up in price over the E92.

Both great cars IMO and still some E46 330i's out there that have been well looked after; but you'd need to search for the enthusiast owned car, so contacting folks on the relevant E46 groups on FB and maybe the forums too.

Re the E63 630i; they're lovely cars and not that expensive to fix when it comes to suspension & brakes; having owned an E65 730d; those and the E63/63 share a lot of the same suspension with the E39 and E60/61 range, so parts by Moog, Meyle, Febi Bilstein and Lemforder are very easy to source via eBay and decent local motorfactors (not ECP) etc

I'm not sure what the E9x range is like for electrical niggles, but the E6x range can throw up electrical niggles more readily than running gear/suspension issues, so whichever you go for,, have a decent code reader and hook it up to see what's going on, if anything etc

Before I bought my 730D (silly move seeing as I do such low miles); I test drove a few 630i and 650 E63s and they were superb; the 650i is a belting engine and sounds superb, but for me the 630i handled a lot better, took the B road twisties a lot better and the engine really suits it IMO. Should have bought one, but didn't as prefer 4 doors and a decent boot personally, but they are still a consideration if In ever sell my E39 touring
