I have wanted a m5 f10 for a while now, wish they did a touring because it needs to fulfil family duties.... anyways a X5M has caught my eye, they are under £20k

Good or bad idea?

More bad than good as it’s not what you want. frown
If you really can’t have a M5 ,to do it all ,and an second car won’t work , aren’t there any performance estates with a V8 which appeal ?
So you’re still in a car, not SUV

Considered E43 estate.

S6 estate

550i like rocking horse... so may have to consider 540i with some m perf gear

Cayenne 3.6 GTS

So is the x5m not a good idea, are they that bad?

I have never owned one, but if the various BMW fora are to be trusted, then yes, the E70 X5M is a bad idea (epic thirst, as in 50 % more than an M5, 6 speed gearbox, all the early weaknesses of the N63/S63 not yet sorted).

The F15 X5M is a much better proposition, but also a lot more expensive. The ML63 (5.5 TT V8) has a fairly good reputation, and should not be too far from your budget if you want a performance SUV (and with a nicer soundtrack).

Don’t do it a friend bought an approved one a few years ago and the dealer gave him his money back eventually.

I can’t remember the issues but there were many and it got silly after a while, the dealer was genuinely embarrassed at not being able to fix it.

It was a one owner low mileage and he did wonder if it had spent most of its time on a ramp..

Shame as it was a cool looking machine.
