So my 320i Xdrive Touring has been a dependable daily driver since I bought it in 2018. The auto box is great for the daily commute and the boot has been practical for ferrying our son’s pushchair around. However I’ve been increasingly wanting more power - it’s not slow in standard form but not exactly pulse raising either - stock power peaks around 180bhp.

I decided to get a remap. The chart below shows a decent gain in both power and torque across the Rev range, up to 60bhp increase at the peak. The stock power was lower than anticipated but is explained by the fact I’ve not got around to removing my winter tyres - yeah yeah, I know! It was calibrated based on 95 RON and I could have seen another 20bhp easily with higher octane but I’ll leave that for a future tune up if I decide it’s still a bit lacking.

I’ve been close to swapping the car recently but decided to remap and save some pennies for a rainy day. Will report back after I’ve swapped back into summer tyres and properly driven it but I can say the effects are immediately noticeable, particularly at 4K+ rpm.

Hey there, I’ve got an F34 320i and have often thought of doing a re-map. Happy to hear that you’ve found the upgrade worthwhile. Can you answer 2 questions for me: 1) Did you have to remove the head gasket and upgrade the pistons within the cylinders or was it all done via the ECU and... 2) Where did you have it done and how much did it cost you? Many thanks in advance.

Standard/stock... make your mind up.

Clue: It's the former.

I have a 420 and often wondered if a remap would make it into the 430, or are they diferent 4 cylinder engines?

They are the same basic engine but the x30i engines have beefed up bits over the x20i. You can remap a 320i to approximately 330i power and a 330i to not far of 340i power.

Can I assume the tuning company checks the specifications of the rest of the drivetrain - gearbox, clutch, etc - to ensure it can reliably handle the extra torque?

The rest of the drivetrain is the same as the 328/330i anyway.

There is no problem.

Mate has one tuned to nearly 260hp and now at 160k miles, no issues at all.

His is auto btw. But it is not massive power so manual would be fine too.
