Oil Housing and filter Collapse B58
Discussion
Apologies if this has been covered before.
Just a heads up .
Had my 340i in for its second service at 4 years old at my local dealer in Tring.
Got a call to tell me the oil filter and housing had collapsed. Unfortunately it wasn't covered under my extended warranty with BMW , so it would cost 1k to fix ( 5 hours labour).
The dealer quickly put a goodwill claim in as it was out of the 3 year Manufacturers Guarantee .While i was waiting for a response i did some googling, looks like this isn't uncommon and can happen on the first service. That's fine as it's covered within the 3 year Guarantee.
The good news is BMW UK honoured the whole claim.
It's nice to post a positive outcome from BMW UK

Good to hear them doing something right! Could I ask, how many miles had it been since the previous service? Also how old is your car?
First I read it was because of long service intervals, then I read it was the housing and there is a replacement part to solve the issue. I did think if it was going to happen it'd be during the first service but as you have proven (along with others) that is not the case. I left the first service till the car asked for it, took it to the dealer and all was fine.
I'm not 8k after that and would like to do an oil and filter, my trusted mechanic says he does lots of 40i and have had no issues, I showed him pictures and he said if it happened he could remove it with various tools so I'm taking it in soon (just waiting on my coilovers to arrive to do them too).
Although common, in terms of how many B58 engines there are out there I think it's still relatively rare but it's annoying not knowing how/why/when it happens!

First oil change ( 2 Years) @ 13000 miles . Second oil change ( 4 years) @ 27000 miles .
I think i'm going to change the oil once a year .

I believe Consumable items like oil filters are not covered.
The filter is not, but the actual housing piece would surely be covered as the whole oil filter housing is being replaced which is definitely not a consumable.Looking around it appears the B58 engine the bottom of the oil filter splits from the filitration material and is difficult to remove.

This has happened on both of my services, despite having an intermediate oil change. I was told by the BMW techs this time around that they've changed the design of the housing and filter itself to prevent this from happening in the future. I bloody hope so given that I'll be out of warranty in the next few months..
