So after leaving asda last night my boot wouldn't close, had to drive home with the boot flapping open every time I went over bumps. I got home and eventually managed to get the boot to close but then the boot lights wouldn't come off no matter what i did. Any idea why they are permanently on? Car is a e53 X5.

Try adjusting the boot lid, might be some small rubber stoppers give them a turn inwards and boot should latch properly and light go off.

First off, is the boot lid actually latching? I have an E36 that struggled with that as the metal skin the latch bolts to had split and the latch had pushed back from where it needed to be to pick up the catch bar it closed onto.

Secondly, if that's ok its probably in the micro switch or sensor that tells the internal light that the boot is shut. I had to replace the microswitch in my E36, it would be worth looking at whether you can / need to do the same.

Finally forgive me if this is teaching you to suck eggs but it would be worth taking the bulbs out for the moment so you don't end up with a flat battery till this is sorted.
