Toying with the idea of getting one of these as per the title but never had experience of 5's, anyone got one of these? Reliable? Decent drive? Won't be doing huge mileage in it, just shorter local trips and the occasional longer journey. Any feedback appreciated.

n53 or the four pot?

ive had a n53 530i f10 for 5 years and its been great. Injectors changed to index 11 and regular servicing. 41mpg yesterday and can shift when you want it, provided you dont expect to drive it like a diesel.

if talking 4 banger no clue, no interest in those.

I drove a 28i X3 in South America and it was quite punchy. I wouldn't mind one in a touring but they are very hard to find.

528i (also 523i, and 530i) were also a n53 six until 2013.

I was wrong. Here’s the changeover month from N53 to N20:

Looks like i was wrong too biggrin

I was sure the n53 528i was much later than 2011. Perhaps they brought out my model (530i n53) after changing 528i from n53 to n20. Maybe they had a stack of engines left over! They certainly didnt sell many anyway.

Is the timing chain the main issue with the N20? Any idea of the cost to replace and does failure wreck the engine? Any other issues with this unit such as oil consumption, etc?

Yes.
About £800 to replace it all with OE parts with the oil pump as well. With that done it's a good engine but I'd still look for a six cylinder one instead.

6 cyl petrol I assume? Dervs don't like short local trips do they?
