Car Security - X5/Keyless BMWs
Discussion
I use the Disklok ones from Euro Car Parts. They’re inexpensive (about £10-£15) and come in multiple sizes. We also use a StopLock on the steering wheel. You’ll need the Pro one which is bent to cope with the wheel on an X5 (I need it for my X3 so guess the same for X5?). Also handy for opening the passenger wing mirror if you have manual ones!

Not taking the pee in any kind of way, but isn’t that a lot of work than pressing a button on a remote?I get it’s handier in other ways, but every time you get into the car you have to remove that thing.

This is the pouch. There’s also a smaller one.

You are excessively focused just on the car, you really, depending on area, need to look at the house door handles, locks and glass (laminate glass is what you need, still safety glass like toughened, but is far more resistant to physical attack and will make far more noise). Toughened really is useless from a security perspective.
Outside lighting etc. as well.

We leave some fairly high-value cars parked on the drive as the garages are full. The advice we were given is cameras, alarm and floodlights then just the standard car security. We also make sure the main gates and pedestrian gate are locked when it gets dark. Seriously though, the dogs running around outside is the best deterrent out of all of them. Three sons as well helps! The house just looks like to much hassle so hopefully, they'd move on. Saying that, a friend of mine had a van pull up at his a few years ago with 3 guys with shotguns. He had better security than us. They still took the cars, jewelry, and all his paintings in under 10 mins.

So we just need a gated house and a few dogs..... simple.... I wonder why everyone doesn’t do this? Edited by James-m5qjf on Sunday 19th July 18:41
Disklok or Stoplock Pro Elite on the steering wheel.
Pouch for keys as you are aware - and/or keep them in a little safe (something Chubb I have solely for keys but it originally cost the previous house owner about £300 as a £4K rated one which is also handy for passports etc).
As opposed to the Ghost option how about a Pandora Mini BT (alarm and immobiliser with a bluetooth fob - about the size of an SD card - to deactivate the immobiliser).
If you fancy an immobiliser and a Cat 5 Tracker how about a Meta unit ... Meta S5 Deadlock. A tracker with immobiliser and all controlled if you wish from a Smartphone app.
Both the Meta and Pandora options (at £500 to £575) offer better value for money to me than just an immobiliser like the Ghost (which is about £400).

Also, how worried should I be with an X5 parked on my drive?
I know it's a bit finger in the air, but heard/seen a lot about people trying to thieve X5s, people even getting attacked etc, am i over worrying?
If you live in Birmingham, Manchester, Leeds, Bradford etc, then perhaps you should maybe worry. A garage would help. Or a fenced off driveway. Motion activated security lights are a great deterrent. Watch out for anyone following you home etc. Also watch out for Faraday pouches failing. Test them every so often. Beef up your home security. There's going to be tough times ahead with a massive rise in unemployment on the horizon once the furlough scheme ends so I expect crime will also rise.I know it's a bit finger in the air, but heard/seen a lot about people trying to thieve X5s, people even getting attacked etc, am i over worrying?
Friends of mine in London were broken into years ago for their X5 when they were out. It had a tracker and the police were pretty efficient and found it in a shipping container at a port the next day.

Yep, you shouldn't be worried. It's insured I assume. Not emotionally attached to it? Means you should sleep soundly at night. If you get jacked on your drive just give them the keys. Foolish to put up a fight over a bit of metal ... esp. one that's insured.I know it's a bit finger in the air, but heard/seen a lot about people trying to thieve X5s, people even getting attacked etc, am i over worrying?

New RR, wife's RS6 and something else, 1 series I think. Belonged to his eldest. Funny enough they left his exotica in the garage. He was more annoyed about his paintings which I've never asked about but always assumed they were worth more than the rest put together. Way I look at it, if someone wants your car bad enough they'll get it - no matter what. I've never worried about mine, just pay my insurance, take sensible precautions and take my chances.
