I'm currently looking for a cheap, used, automatic estate, possibly E Class or Mondeo. Searching Autotrader as you do and a 3.0D X3 appeared in budget (£3-4000) its only an SE but the spec is reasonable and it looks tidy.

Given the desire for an estate is because i want the space, both boot and rear legroom how does the X3 cope with two adults in the back. With current travel restrictions instead of flying to spain I was looking at driving. The Mondeo and E Class would offer great luggage space and room for rear passengers its still making me favour them.

It looks like the X3 can suffer from transfer box issues and the DPF has a service life but for those that own one or have owned one how do you rate them.

The DPF doesn’t have a service life. They never need changing on BMWs and usually block due a fault with another component.

I don’t think early E83s had them. As a car the E83 feels quite cheap inside. More E87/F30 quality than E46. They don’t have much space inside. I remember doing PDIs on brand new ones, the door seals creaked like an E36 convertible.

I’ve mellowed a bit towards them now and can see the appeal of an old diesel one for the right money.
