Nov 2008 E92 325i 98,000 miles

The rhythmic clunking in the background is only there on a stone-cold start, goes away after a few minutes. Certainly seems to be coming from the bottom rear of the engine rather than the top front which is where I thought it would be if it was - as just about every N53 cold start thread suggests - injectors related?

Have taken the cover off and all the injectors are series 03. Phoned BMW and they said it's not had the injectors done under warranty before and is not due any recalls.

Going to take it to an indie and leave it with them for a cold start and diagnosis but interested in others thoughts too.

Cheers.

Sounds rough that.

Has it just started happening?

Any codes?

Does it run ok apart from the noise?

Bought the car on Friday, it didn't do it on the obviously not quite completely cold start then. It ran totally fine on the 1 hour drive home, right up to motorway speeds.

No codes on my cheapie reader.

..probably not misfiring then, though you ideally need something better than a generic code reader in order to get actual codes. google ista inpa.

id pop top cover off, use a tube to listen and try and isolate the noise like a stethoscope. The noise sounds a little like vacuum pump, but hard to tell.

Indie's diagnosis is #3 injector is duff. Has quoted just under £1400 to supply and replace all 6, eek! Going to try a matching index used one from eBay first for ~£140 and hope for the best.
