Evening

I’ve a 2019 335d. When I stop at traffic lights, it automatically stops, but then restarts itself again despite me doing nothing before I need it to. I’m assuming it’s meant to do this?!

Cheers

Yes. Read the handbook (on-line version available too). Generally it will not go into, or it will come out of stop, if certain conditions are met (or not met).

If it is stopped, then to keep it stopped (if required conditions are met), and not blind people behind, handbrake on, and press P (this refers to a 66 plates 335d).

Yes it will restart early if it feels that it needs to run to be able to cover all the demands from the car

Go to the BMW website, and you can download a version specific to your car if you put your VIN in the details requested.
“Owners”
“BMW apps”
“BMW Drivers App”

You can also access the handbook on screen in the car.

Now you say it, I had noticed that a few weeks ago!

OP, while you are at it. I suggest having a look at things you can code into the ‘radio’ buttons. An example (for me), is coding button 8 as a ‘Sat Navigation to home‘. That helps if you are in the middle of a city, etc, and just want to get onto the nearest rout home. I have then coded button 7 to ‘navigation off’, for when I am back on route, although that is not completely necessary.

(Also, have a look at the power and torque dials, that you can bring up on vehicle settings, that will give an insight into their usage in motion - entertaining and informative, for a while!)

Clearly my first year of ownership of the car has not been investigative enough!

It's just a thought OP but if you plan on keeping your car for any length of time you might want to think about turning the stop/start feature off (assuming you can).

My only experience of stop/start was in a 2007 BMW 123d (manual).

The AGM battery that had to be coded didn't last 5 years, and cost over £250 replaced by a BMW Indy. The starter motor didn't make it to 7 years old and cost over £600 for replacement by Sytner (I couldn't wait for the Indy to book it in).

By comparison my 2006 Z4 "ordinary" battery lasted 10 years and cost half as much to replace! And the starter motor was still going strong after 13 years when I sold the car.

I don't know for sure if those components dying was purely due to the operation of stop/start, but somehow I can't see any other reason.

Enjoy your car anyway - a 335d must be pretty entertaining!

Google bimmercode, you can recode a number of things, such as remove start/stop.

Definitely worth coding out, you can forget about it then. Aside from the increased wear on things, it's a more refined experience without it.
