Hi,

Looking to add some spacers onto my 640d. Plenty of options available 12mm, 16mm,20mm etc. Not sure what to go for has anyone had any real world experience of doing this and what did you use?

Here is the car for reference:

If that is your own car? by the look of it the wheels are pretty much in line with the bodywork??

My car yeah. Could be the perspective of the photo, the rears are not in line and the fronts albeit slightly better than the rears are still inside the arch. I'm not looking for some mad stance look, just a slight widening of the track before I drop it a little bit too...

Think M6 stance and track, nothing more.

Anyone put spacers on their 640 ???

Can you do a 'down the side' shot so we can see how far in your alloys sit?

From the picture they look to be nearly flush, but pics can be deceiving smile

This is my E39 touring, albeit sat on it's winter alloys & tyres; but a before & after shot of adding 15mm spacers all round:

I also run an 82mm stud conversion kit; it's a safer and better option when it comes to spacers IMO. The studs tighten into the hub and then the spacer and alloy placed onto the studs (no faffing with trying to get a single wheel bolt in to hold them both) and then you tighten/torque down the wheel bolts provided, or use ones of your own choice (I think yours will be M14x1.5, but could be wrong).

The bolts then tighten the alloy/spacer onto the hub and the force is pulled, equally, the other way; so you've two directions of locking force instead of once (the longer bolt) if that makes sense?

Or, just stick to the longer bolts wink

Bimecc are the usual go-to's for spacers, but Precision Engineering and Mtec Online's own spacers/bolts/studs are perfectly fine without the silly price for any additional 'name'

http://www.ebaystores.co.uk/Mtec-Online?_rdc=1

If you contact them, they'll be able to do you a deal on spacers/bolts/stud kit etc

15mm Rear and 12.5mm front are pretty standard for rear drive BMW’s.
Never had any issues in over 10 years, just don’t forget your extended bolts.

Bmw's are pretty good in this regard I reckon. I needed 25mm spacers all round on my 370Z to get the wheels to sit flush with the arches.

Video here of a guy who put 15mm spacers on his 640d. Seems very happy.

Agree - running this setup on F31 - Bimecc. No issues.

I fitted a set 15mm spacers f/r to my e92 M3 and I've had no issues with them.

I don't think I'd go any more than that but 15mm should be fine.

I’m thinking 15mm rear and 12mm front

Nothing too much but a slight increase in track.

Will add a photo showing side profile over weekend

Thanks gents

Apologies for delay, all 4 wheels shown below.

Fronts sit further out in arch that the rears.... I reckon I could easily go 15mm rear and 12mm front, if not slightly more but I don't want it to obvious, all about the subtle tweaks for me

I don't normally like the looks of the 6 but that's a stunning car.

I'm going through a similar thought process at the moment, although it's not that I particularly want a wider track, just the wheels I like for the e46 are 17mm more offset. Giving it a go with spacers is probably a bit more viable than just buying wheels optimistically- you could even get a visual sense just by trapping anything e.g 10mm thick between the wheel and the hub (just remember to take it off before you drive anywhere)

Actually, if you want to match the M6, have a look at the wheel specs for M6 wheels and compare them to what you have, you should be able to work out how much further out the wheels/ tyres are.

As far as I can tell from a quick Google the 640d is as follows:

TRACK/TREAD (FRONT) 1600 mm 63 inches
TRACK/TREAD (REAR) 1665 mm 65.6 inches

While the M6 is:

Track Width, Front (in) 64.2 inches
Track Width, Rear (in) 63.5 inches

That came from two different sites and i'm not sure I beleive that the m6 rear track is less than a 640d ??

Can anyone find anything to disprove the above ??

Cheers, I used to be into big mods in my younger days but now I like to be a bit more subtle and stick close to Manufacturer, think OEM+ style.

Cars been played with a bit 750NM and just shy of 400 BHP. Full Piano black conversion on the interior. M6 spolier, dechromed, wheels in gloss black.

It''s done 70k now and suspension doesn't feel as stiff as it once was so thinking a very small drop similar to M6 which will then need the spacers to ensure it sits right, hence the original post :-)
